How to install linux on a HD?

How can I install linux on the HD from jailbait? I've got networking going, and got the slackware dist on another box on my network, but since there isn't any floppy or cdrom, I can't figure out how to get it to start the install. I was able to partition the HD just fine, but also can't make any file systems on it since jailbait doesn't have mkfs, and won't let me install the libs for mkfs.

Jailbait is probably using an older version of libc than the binary you are installing. That's why you can't just copy the binary from Slackware to your i-o. You can try to find an older version of Slackware and try a binary from that. I'm not sure, but I believe Debian Potato might be binary comptable with Jailbait.

My little distro, TTY-Opener, should have mkfs.ext2 in it. You can load the image in a loopback (if you have a Linux box) and pull the binaries from the image. This system is binary-compatable with Debian Potato, because that's what I used to glue it all together.

Yes, it's been awhile since I touched that project. :)

If you want to run a full distro from HDD, others can definatly help you, but if all you want to do is "run Linux", why not give Midori Linux a try? It's more current that the JailBait distros, and is very stable. The latest build has, among other features, XMMS, VNC, Opera, Samba, USB LAN and Wireless LAN support.

It boots quickly from the internal FLASH drive, so No HDD is necessary. The only thing is that it isn't a full distro, so if that's what you want, you will be disappointed. It does make for a nice, quick, robust web surfer, MP3 player, and picture viewer.

Check it out at http://vischeck.homeip.net/m4i/

You just might like it!
