although i have a grasp of the concept, i was wondering if someone could tell me what i would need to make an old pc running win98 with 133MHz processor (ha!) and 64 mb of ram run reasonably faster... its my mothers and it CRAWLZ but i need to know: is it more emphasis on RAM or CPU? How can i be sure which of each i can put in (im not familiar with sockets etc) and is it a simple drop in (with fan of course) or might it be too old to handle faster stuff? am i not mentioning something relevant? any help is really appreciated.

Increasing the ram is the easiest way. But with the computer being older you may not be able to go over 128mb or 256mb. This would be a drop-in upgrade. To know if the processor is upgradable we would need to know what kind of socket the motherboard has. If you want a faster computer, it's almost as cheap ( and better, IMHO ) to buy a new motherboard and processor. Computers these days are a lot like used cars. You may find a good deal on a clunker, but it still will not compare to the latest models.

Uses a little PCI tweaking proggy to increase your hard drive speed. In my experience, that adds a lot; of course it won't work on all systems, but no harm in trying. Follow the instructions carefully though.
