Thoughts on TennMax lasagna fans?
How are these fans working out in terms of performance/noise.

I actually have a Compaq IA-1, not an I-iopener, so I have a *little* more room for fans. However, it looks like the TennMax lasagna fans may be the WTG. The trick is, I plan on putting one of the systems in my bedroom, and my tolerance for noise is fairly low. How loud are these fans given an unrestricted air intake?

Also, most of my IA-1's are running with the stock K6-2 266 processor, though I have one with a K6-III+ 450. Is this HCF going to be able to handle these processors? Thankfully, Compaq put a real switching power supply in the IA-1, so I have 12, 5, 3.3 and 2.5V available to me (though the current limit on the 12V line is fairly modest). I'm thinking of going for the 12V units, and running them at 7V for noise reduction.

Does anyone know if that will reduce the noise to "nightstand" levels?

Thanks!

I can comment on the Lasagna fan. I just got mine in and powered it up for the first time. It run virtually silent, however it is a 5v fan. I feel it could use a little more umph to get it the air moving, but that would raise the noise on it. Sorry I can't comment on your other questions about the voltage drop and noise reduction.

I just installed 2 of the TennMax IO 5v fans this week in 2 i-openers. I have read here many times that people cut the RF shield on the IOs to reduce the noise level from these fans. After installing both fans and putting units back together, I am baffled as to why people think they have to cut the RF shields. They both run silent.. well ok yes you can here them but they are hardly noticable. I have placed one on our nighttable and my wife (who is a very light sleeper) didnt notice it at all.

Note that TennMax has displayed great service for me. I had purchased a number of these fans and TennMax was great while ordering them (via phone) and answered all questions. One of the clips snapped when I put it on the processor so I called them and was told that 2 sets of replacement clips were being shipped out to me right away that same day.

Great service and a quiet, solid fan as far as I'm concerned! I'll purchase more when I need them.

Hope this helps!

BTW... Question to others here who use these fans.. When my fans got here they had included Thermal Adhesive Tape but had not installed it on the fan. When I went to place it on the fan I noticed there was already a black rubber square compound on the heatsink. I simply took that off, cleaned the heatsink really well with rubbing alcohol (followed by the cpu as well) and applied the adhesive tape directly onto the heatsink and cpu.

What have others done? Did you use the fan simply as it was without the adhesive tape, replaced the black rubber with the tape or *gasp* apply the adhesive tape to the rubber?

Thanks!

Thanks for the opinions. I went ahead and ordered a single cooler, figuring I wouldn't lose much if it was annoying. If it works out, I'll order 3 more :)

BTW - TennMax has a new version of their cooler out now. It is 11mm, but has a solid base - so you can use any thermal jelly you want. I prefer Arctic Silver from work on other projects. I scrubbed down the green (on the IA-1) rubbery goop with rubbing alcohol and a paper towel - and then applied the thermal compound as usual. It helps.

Update:

I ordered one of the new 11mm Lasagna fans with the 12V motor, and it was, needless to say, a bit loud. There was also a bit of trouble getting it to snap down over the socket, and I ended up breaking part of the retaining clip on one side.

After a bit of effort, I managed to securely fasten the heatsink to the processor, and am running it at 7V. It is practically silent, and best of all, the system is perfectly stable. It has held up to days of use without a hitch.

I ordered 3 more for the rest of my IA-1's today :)
