V5 asmd cpu adding

I just got a V5 from badflash and am planning to add a amd 500 (2.2) k62 to it. What switches do I need to change on the board if any? I am not interested yet in changing the speed. 200 should be ok for now..

Thanks

Actally, I don't think I have the Info You Need Here.
But SEARCH has Your Answers !

Actually I have searched... All I got was threads on modifying the multipliers and FSB, which I DON'T want to do.

Bottom line.

Can I just add the CPU? Or do I need to adjust any settings?

I realize this may have been covered (But I cannot find it after searching the bbs), but it takes more time for you to type for me to search than if you just told me.

Set switch 4 (SW4) pole 1 to "on" and pole 2 to "off". This is the 2-pole switch that sits between the memory socket and the CPU. This setting will generate 2.2 volts for the cpu core. No other changes are needed, as long as you get proper cooling. The passive heatsink has a recess for the Rise chip. For the AMD K6-2, you must fill the cutout with a good conductor or go to active cooling (e.g. Lasagna fan from Tennmax).

That is not all, you cant run the processor at full speed becuase q16 will over heat. The only way to get a processor at any thing over ? i think its 250mhz is to replace the q16 power chip with a DC-DC power adapter. Do a search for dc-dc and you'll find what you need. But DC-DC is a MUST!!! You can cool the q16 but you can only cool it so far, cause the rate of HEAT it produces is far to much!!!!!

RE:SW3...SW4....Correct Setting? posted by: Linuxguru, As mentioned by Turbo3,

Vcore (CPU core voltage) is set by SW4 on a V5. For reference, the settings are:
Pos
.2. .1. Vcore
--- --- -----
off off 2.0 V
off .on 2.2 V
.on off 2.6 V
.on .on 2.8 V

As always, the engineers at Quanta have shown an outstanding consistency in connecting the lsb to the low-order index of the switch position.

Using the the default FSB and PCI clock settings (66/33), the default multiplier (3x) and Vcore at 2.2v, the AMD-K6-III/333AFK (underclocked to 200 Mhz) is a drop-in upgrade that handily outperforms anything else for this socket. No fan required, either, so it's as quiet as the stock IO.

*SF*, do you have any pointers on where to find a K6-III/333AFK? I've searched on Google, eBay, Pricewatch for anything K6-III or K6-3, but the closest I have found is a AMD K6-III+/400 ACR (0-70 temp range) and the sucker is $60. It does have 2.0Vcore, but I'm not up on the subtlties of CPU's. I'd just be running it at 200MHz, and using my "optimized" passive heatsink, as soon as I machine a new one (I'm building up a new V5 to replace my "iopened" that was stolen two weeks ago...) Thanks.

Only Idea is If You would post What you are willing to Pay,
maybe someone with an Extra CPU might be talked out of it ?

Good Luck ! *SF*

Based on the old post I found, the K6-III/333AFK was $30 new at Fry's. I guess I wouldn't want to pay much more than that.

Thanks,

Thanks for the link, Lincoln_man. But now I'm really confused--there is no K6-III/333 or K6-III+/333 listed at all. And AMD's K6-III pdf datasheet only lists 400 and 450MHz.

I have since found a "K6-3 333MHz" listed at New Technology Computers for $33, and have emailed them to ask the exact part number. (Their salesguy on the phone wouldn't look it up himself, and referred me to the wrong tech support email addresss, so I'm not holding out too much hope...)

If you are only going to run it at 200Mhz, just get it. The CPU will be marked with what core voltage you need, but it will likely be 2.2 volts.

Actually, I did! The chip that New Technology had was actually a K6-III/333AFK (I ended up calling back and asking their tech support guy to read me the chip info over the phone) so I ordered it on the spot. It was the last one they had.

Just to clear things up in my own mind, the only reason to get the "+" mobile processors is to minimize the heat when "overclocking"?

Thanks,

Kludgemeister
(P.S. the Badflash V5 arrived yesterday, perfect working and cosmetic condition and I reflashed the BIOS this afternoon. Dual RS232 board and new processor are on the way, I got the spindle for my milling machine back yesterday from Sherline so I can CNC a new heatsink maybe over the weekend and I'm in fat city!)

well kind of, but the only reason to get the + version of the k6 processors is cause they are the only processors that are SOFT multiplyer changable. You cant get above what was it 300-333mhz on boot. Only after boot?
