WinXP faster than 300MHz?

Hi all

I did the mods today to set the FSB to 100MHz etc, and installed a K6-3+ 400MHz CPU. I found out afterwards that this won't POST above 300MHz (but will at either 66 x 4.5 or 100 x 3). Utilities like k6clk.exe won't run on XP because they use privileged instructions.

Does anyone know of any way of getting the multiplier up after POST? One possibility I thought of was tweaking a boot loader such as GRUB; another possibility might be a Window VxD. It would be great if something already existed and I didn't have to try writing it myself.

Assuming I do have to write it myself, is there source available for a program such as k6clk.exe that I can use as a reference?

Just to pre-empt the possibility - saying "use Win98" isn't an option for me; I'd rather run XP at 300!

Buy a Badflash bios chip. The recent models recognize an AMD K6-X+ chip and allow you to boot at speeds higher than 300MHz. You must install a switch to set the multiplier in hardware. You must do some other mods to protect Q16 and defeat the current sense resistor in the power supply to run faster than 300 MHz, as well (this relates to problems with the high current draw at higher speeds and overheating). This board has the necessary info, as does Badflash.

P.S. The K6-3+ chip is in many cases a current hog compared to a K6-2+. Three out of four K6-3+ chips in my recent experience do not run stably at 400 MHz when cooled with a Lasagna fan. Better cooling is usually required.

I believe I've made all these mods (cooling resistor, dip switches for multiplier setting and FSB setting). I also did send a BIOS to Jack for reflashing recently, and it came back with what looked like Wild Pencils 5.40a BIOS, which is what I have installed on the unit in question. Is the BadFlash BIOS not the same as WP 5.40a? I think I may
have sold the unit that had the BIOS that Jack flashed; the others I hot flashed with the 5.40a BIOS from Wild Pencil's site.

I'm starting to suspect the problem may be switch 3 of SW1 is faulty. The guy who did the soldering job is a pro and did an immaculate job, but maybe the switch itself is bad. That seems to be the common thread to the boot speeds that don't work.

Alternatively, maybe this is a CPU cooling issue. If I boot Midori and use k6mult to push up to 350 or 400MHz, the machine freezes within a few seconds.

I should be getting a second K6-III+/400 within a couple of days; it'll be interesting to try that. Otherwise it may well be that a k6-2+ will be better.

"Resistor" R130 near the multiplier switch, SW1, must be removed. It is really a jumper (0 ohm resistor) across pole 2 of SW1. Pole 2 on = 300MHz. Poles 1 and 3 on = 400MHz. Poles 1,2 and 3 on = ?Mhz (I haven't tried this combo).

I'll bet you have the V540 and not the V540A bios. What does the screen say when you boot up? Wild Pencil's version is the V540 and The Reverend put the K6+ support on that to make it the V540A. The V540 will do just what is happening to you, and it does not have the L2 cache support, so it is a lot slower than it should be.

You're right, I think. I modded a second v5 tonight and got the same behaviour. Then I saw your post, and checked, and it does say 540, not 540a. For some reason I was convinced that the bios image I had flashed was a 540a.

Sad thing is, I had a 540a that I got from Jack. That was in a v1 that I sold on eBay about two weeks ago. The other three iO's I have were all hotflashed from that one, with 540. Sigh.

Thanks! That's fixed it. Now I just have to figure out how to cool the CPU so it stays up (the Lasagna fan doesn't do the job; bummer, as I've just ordered a second), and why the CMOS settings won't persist on either unit, despite replacing the battery on both.

Gramster,
I've run into a road block that I haven't been able to resolve and was wondering if it has affected you.

I have an I-O that has been running just fine (very stable) for some time. Here's the specs.
K6 2+ 450Mhz (4.5 x 100fsb), 128Megs ram, Win98se.
I recently tried to upgrade it to WinXP.... CRASH AND BURN! Tried 6 times-- no dice.

After trying many different configuration changes, it finally worked but ONLY if I dropped the fsb down to 66!!
At 100fsb it crashes consistently during CHKDSK half way thru boot up.

Is your machine running XP and at what settings (Mhz and FSB) ??

Thanks,
