I was wondering if there was a way to send an image to the sandisk via lpt1, so i can get an os on without a hd

If you update the bios, you can boot from a bootable CD and then update it with an image contained on the CD. I know of no way to make the ports talk to anything unless they are already hacked.

what kind of cd drive, regular pc ide , laptop style ide, or usb. And also what would you recommend to use

You would need a standard CD drive as it will have to connect to the IDE pins with a modified cable (the pins are mirror image). Also will need an external power supply for the 5 and 12 volts. Cannot boot through USB.

so i need to modify my 44 pin i opener cable to a 40 pin by removing the last 4 pins and adding a 40 pin ide connector on it

Yes, check with Jack at badflash dot com. He has 44 to 40 pin adaptors.
