Booting off from an original iopener rom?

I know that the newer iopeners won't boot when you put in a hard drive, unless you use a badflash bios. Let's say you can reimaged the sandisk drive with midori and you used the original iopener bios. Can this unit boot, assuming that you didn't attach a hard drive? Thanks.

It's been a while...but I don't think so. If I remember correctly, Netpliance put some stuff in the BIOS that only booted their OS. You had to boot to their system, get to a bash prompt then flash the BIOS. That worked until they changed things.

Anyway, WildPencil's BIOS fixes several things that make the BIOS upgrade worth it...

It was just a thought. Thanks...

I'm just curious how you can actually go to a bash prompt iopener's bios and update the bios, if possible.

You'll probably have to search archives to get the "good" answer. If I remember, you had to press TAB four times at a certain point in the boot up process. You then had to change the DNS, dial up info, etc....then dial up to another computer, log in, transfer the BIOS file and the QNX BIOS update program, update the BIOS...it was fairly difficult.

A MUCH better method is to get a spare BIOS from Jack at Badflash.com, or just have him do the BIOS replacement...Highly recommend either method.

If it helps, here is what I came up with on an IO that I recently got...http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=technical&Post=2588&Idle=&Sort=&Order=&Page=&Session=

The early V3 bios would boot to a reformatted sandisk, and of course the 'noth'n but 'net version will work. I don't think any of the later files will boot without a hacked bios. With the V5 the protection got so crazy that the AT&T version would not boot with an Earthlink bios in it, and both were V5's.
