AMD 450 help
CPU UPGRADE

I have seen posts for upgrading cpu's on the i/o but I haven't seen anything on how to install the AMD 450 chip found at badflash and tiger direct. I know how to install a cpu. I was just wondering if there was anything else that had to be done in this particular situation. (jumpers, soldering, ect.) Or is it a straight forward installation? Any help would be great. Thanks

I just posted an update for the Datel mod. Check the tech ref section for my earlier and cheaper hack. Long story short, you need to do some soldering to make a K6 work above 200Mhz on any unit. V1, V2's need the datel switching power supply. V3 and up can use the datel, or cooling resistor mod.

Gee, Badflash, that's funny. I have two V1's running with your resistor mod. Just requires a little more soldering to get 2.0 volts to the (separated) cpu core. (Search for posts by "Las Vegas" some two years ago or more). Forget Datel, since the extra cost to do a V1 or V2 is two 10 cent resistors and six inches of fine wire. This cost HAS to be less than a separate 2-volt power supply.

I know about that one and have looked at it, but most folks are queezy about the resistor mod, and bending up the little bitty leg to solder on a resitor bridge is too much for them. Can't tell you how many people have asked me if I can fix it after they butchered the chip.

Once you screw that up the switching power supply is all that is left. I just cut out the middle man and go straight to it. The lower heat input to the case makes it worth it.

I am missing some big clue.

I just got the mobile K63, I have had the big 10w resistor mod for a year now (lift the pin of Q16 I think), I have the V4 I guess with the dip switches by the memory, I added the ones by the CPU for multiplier, and the one under the modem for clock speed. I have the 5.40a BIOS. It is cooled by a piece of Lasagna.
I have tried a couple of different Laptop HDs. I have a self powered USB hub.

I still can't get past 233. Some multiplier settings give me nothing, the only ones that post are 266 and below. Same with Clock, any combination of 266 and below will post.
I have tried two different K62s (different speed), same exact results.

What have I screwed up that keeps this from working?

Where should I look to start troubleshooting?

Thanks guys!

(of course most people would be happy at 233 or so but not this guy)

Go back over the basic processor hack and see if you skipped something, eg a resitor to remove or install.

Thanks, I think I never added the extra SMD resistor...time to crack the case again.

Looks like that stupid SMD was my problem. I haven't tested it much yet, but it does boot to 450Mhz now.

Sweet!

Thanks!
