Help! Slowly killing my IO --back to IO screen from Win98

Things keep going from bad to worse with my IO. I've been running Win 98 on it for years, found I had a virus, Win 95 SPACES, and couldn't clean it since it infected the system files. I pulled the HD and connected it to my Win 2k system cleaned the virus and all was OK I thought.

I replaced the HD but in the process I cracked the LCD screen, now I have an orange blob on the right. I'll make a trip to Ebay to replace that... Then when I booted I got the "Invalid System Disk" message, took the Hd out and reinstalled it, same thing. Took the disk out and was able to boot from it on another system, so HD is fine. IO does detect it though. I checked the cable thinking that I may have damaged it but after a pin for pin check it's fine.

Put things back together and booted and now I get the IO screen! I can't get out of that for some reason. I really like the system, it's great for bedroom use, no noise and I'd hate to loose it. I'll keep an eye out for a deal on Ebay to replace the screen but in the mean time I'd like to get the system functional again. Any suggestions?

I found the problem with the IO screen coming up, I enabled D: drive in BIOS, and since it couldn't find C: it went to D:. Still can't get the HD to work, now it's not even detected. I'll have to play with it a bit more...

Check the ribbon cable connections? I have in the past pulled to hard on the cable when removing the harddrive causing bad connection. Carefully pressing on the back of the IDC connector sometimes works. May have to verify continuity with ohmmeter.

I pulled the HD again and I can boot from it on another computer. My hunch is the IO cable is bad, I moved the cable around while holding the heatsink with the Hd attached and the screen went black, weird. I'll have to hunt up a new cable to go with my new screen....
