Mandrake 9.1 kernel 2,84 won't boot - "kernel panic"

I've just hacked my iopner and it all looks good (wild pencil bios, hacked hd cable, powers up ) except that when booting to Mandrake linux 9.1 kernel 2.84 I get the infamous "kernel panic Try passing init= option to kernel." message.

I've tried adding the line append = "hdb = noprobe" to lilo.conf, to no avail. Any ideas? I am a complete Linux novice, so I would need explicit directions - sorry.
