I bet this has been seen before, but I searched for an hour and couldn't fix my problem.

So, I recently got an IO off of ebay. Also, I got a fan/HD mount kit and the v5.40a BIOS. I got Midori to run seamlessly, but since I have a piece-of-crap microsoft wi-fi card and want to play music from my IO, that didn't help much. After a lot of effort, I got FREEDOS to run on my hard disk. However, I've had incredible amounts of difficulty getting any copy of windows to install.

WinME freezes up after the first stage, same with 98. 2000 and XP I have to set up on my desktop, and they tell me that 'NTDLR is missing' when I try to boot the drive on my IO. I've tried setting up 98 on my desktop and have gotten it to work perfectly, but when I put the drive in the IO it tells me either "Invalid system disk" or "Disk I/O error". I know that there's probably a single BIOS setting or group of settings I'm missing, but I cannot figure it out. I saw earlier threads, and was able to progress further in 98 setup by setting my drive to 'LBA', but none of the other suggestions have helped.

What do you think my problem could be?

When I first put mine together I kept having problems while trying to install. Between myself and the guys on this board is was reduced to either bad memory or the CPU getting too hot. My I-Opener came with the Rise 266 CPU and when I removed the heatsink and replaced it I never added any more thermal material. I bought one of the Tennmax Lasagna fans and the clip broke while I was trying to install it. The same day my new clips arrived I also received a Pentium 200 MMX in the mail, so I ditched the Rise and went with the Pentium. Zero problems since.

I had no problems with the San Disk while using the Rise and heatsink, the problems only came up while using the hard disk for extended periods of time.

Try this... The next time the I-Opener locks up immediately restart it, hit DEL to enter BIOS setup, right arrow over to the CPU speed settings, and check the temp. I got consitant lockups at 45 degrees C with the Rise and heatsink. With the Pentium and a Tennmax fan I stay in the mid to high 30s.

Hi,

When I first set mine up I had similar trouble with a crappy 500MB IBM drive, in the BIOS I set the disk type to AUTO rather than LBA and it worked fine after that.
One other thing that might be useful to you, is the Ranish Partition Manager. Its great for sorting out screwed partition tables.

Hope that helps,

MrKemak
