Kenwood Entre Entertainment Hub Hard Drive - Possible to Hack/Clone Drive?
Would appreciate your thoughts.

Greetings,

I have a Kenwood Entre Entertainment Hub with a 20 gig IDE hard drive. I finally filled it up with music and wanted to expand my collection. When I opened the case, I found a Seagate Model ST320410A 20 GB 3.5" IDE hard Drive. Upon further research, I discovered that Wind River did the O/S for Kenwood - this was prior to Wind River announcing Linux support. Any tools, thoughts, IDE cloning advice, etc. I would like to put a 120 gig drive into the system.

Thanks!

Symantec Ghost should be able to clone whatever O.S. is currently on the 20 GB HD, onto the new 120 GB HD. Then use Partition Magic or Ranish Partition Manager (free) to re-size the 20 GB partition to the full 120 GB. Ghost has a free trial offer, last time checked.
You'd do this using the bootable floppy version of Ghost; HD "A" (20 GB) on IDE channel 1, HD "B" (120 GB) on IDE channel 2.

This is very simple. Recently my factory drive crashed, unfortunatly my unit was out of warrenty. I contacted kenwood many times with no results. They basically told me that the the Entre was a non-servacable item. Aften much digging I finally came into contact with an Escient employee that I met online. Well problem solved. It is very easy to upgrade your Entre's drive. You cannot add a slave drive, the Entre will only recognize one drive. Currently I hane an 80gig drive in my Entre. Simply follow the steps below:

1) Unplug the Entre, along with all connections (audio/video/network/etc....) Open the unit and remove the existing drive.

2) Install the new drive of your choice. I used an 80gig Maxtor drive. Close the unit and reconnect all connections.

3) DO NOT POWER ON THE UNIT YET. Goto http://webshare.escient.com

4) Log onto the site (Username: ecsupport Password: fbgolden)

5) Open the kenwood folder. Then download the kenwood.zip file. This is a reformat and partition utility. You can also download future updates from this same location. It is about 100meg so it might take awhile to download depening on your connection speed. Now unzip the file and burn it directly to CD. IMPORTANT: make sure that there are no directories when you burn the disk. All files sound be burt directly onto the cd with NO Directories.

6) Now inset the disc into the Entre. Hold the power button for appx. 3 seconds. The reformat and software installation should automatically start.

7) ENJOY!!!!

Hope this helps, if you have any questions feel free to e-mail me directly. I have also heard that you can pull the drive and use an IDE to USB cable to transfer your MP3s to the Entre. As you know the MediaManager software really suxs. I have not tried this yet, but plan on it very soon.

You need to do some things before you burn the software to CD. If you’re putting in a 120gig you’re in luck, delete or move the original PART file then right click on part120 file and rename in to PART. Now burn to CD put in your new hard drive and put in your new CD when the trey opens. If your putting in a smaller HD you will need to edit to edit the PART file, right click and open with notepad or word. Things you will need to know:

Exactly how big the HD is you want to put in (an 80 gig hard drive is really about 74gig)
And 512Blocks = 1Meg
With these numbers you will be able to change the blocks in the file to match your hard drive.

von_Bismarck,
Did you try using Ghost to clone the OS? Did it work? I can't find kenwood.zip either...

Thanks.

I have had many e-mails from people requesting the “kenwood.zip” file. I guess Escient finally realized someone (oops) posted the info on how to upgrade the Entre. Several others have contacted Escient trying to get the “kenwood.zip” file, from what I hear they have been telling people that they no longer have this file (which I'm sure is untrue). Escient has never given technical support to any consumer for the Kenwood Entre and I am sure they are not going to start now. I assume that they never intended for the general public to have access to their FTP files, I just happened to meet a helpful employee in another forum. He generously posted the file and gave me login information, not sure if he is still with the company. Luckily I do still have the Kenwood files on disc; unfortunately the CD is around 100 megs, too large for me to e-mail to the many people requesting it. I'd post it on my hosts’ server but my bandwidth would get eaten up really quick.

On another note: I have since gotten rid of my Entre, one of the wisest decisions I have made regarding my home theater. I have upgraded to a HTPC running the MainLobby Suite by Cinemar ( http://www.cinemaronline.com ). Check it out; this software can do everything the Entre can do plus WAY MORE!

I'm working with David right now to try to get the file. I'm the moderator of the Yahoo! group for the Compaq Music Center but we also discuss the Kenwood Entre. I only have a 20mb limit there, but I plan on asking someone to host the file for us. If anyone would volunteer to host this file, at least for a while, please let me (or David obviously) know.

I'll post the information on where to get this file both here and at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ipaqmusiccenter/ .

Everyone that is interested in this file should really thank David for being willing to share the file with us.

Thanks,

Jason
