I've read elsewhere that you need the iMac "lower slot" memory when you go to 128mb... available at Coast-to-Coast Memory for $115... see:
http://www.coastmemory.com/cgi-bin/memory/cart/cart.cgi?category=appledimms

Anyone care to confirm this before I make the plunge? Thanks!

I bought my PNY 128MB SO-DIMM memory from http://www.us.buy.com/comp/product.asp?sku=10157253&SECTION=servicenet_comp&serviceType=&warrantyType= and its working fine in my i-opener. I think its only 66MHz though. $103 as of this post...

Is the above listed part the "lower slot" type??

Re: PNY mfg part# 6416ZASWM4G09TG-CS
This is 66MHZ 128MB, NOT 100MHZ.
The PNY 100MHZ 128MB part is: 6416YESWM4G09T.
(The 32MB SODIMM which comes with the IO is 100MHZ memory).

vailr,

Sorry for the confusion everyone. Either I misread their part number chart or PNY's chart is due for an update. I assumed that the 'ASW' digits in (6416ZASWM4G09TG-CS) meant 'A: 10ns 100mhz / S: SDRAM / W: 144pin SODIMM'. Argh.. wrong info can be worse than no info at all.

Unfortunately, their chart can't interpret your part number either (6416YESWM4G09T). They don't specify what the 'E' means.

Oh well.. I didn't plan to upgrade to a real cpu anyway. ;)

well, I _finally sprung for some memory...
Crucial # CT 16M64S6W8E.8T
I am having nothing but problems... I bought 2 sticks, tried in 5 different Iopeners.. I have gotten up and running a few times... but not for long, and, mostly, won't even boot.. is it ME? or, do I have the wrong part # ? or, do I have 2 bad sticks? thanks for any tips...

Did anyone determine if the Memory2go.com 128mb sticks worked or not..??

Model: iBook
Capacity: 128MB
MemoryToGo Part Number: CAP161-128MB
OEM Part Number: n/a
Price: $29

They did, but I think they may have changed the Product.

The generic PNY 128MB PC100 SODIMMs on sale at Best Buy work fine. These are 49.99 (reg.) - $20 instant rebate - $10 mail-in rebate = $19.99 + state tax on $49.99.

Redwood....I just got a 128MB Crucial chip, CT16M64S6W7E.8T, 133mhz. Your part # is 100mhz. Assuming you don't have a connection problem, I suggest you change your BIOS settings to the slowest setting..CL3...8/10ns. If it works at that setting, you can work upward in stages. The fastest is CL2, Turbo. I had one ram chip that would not complete a boot on the fastest setting, but worked just fine at CL2...Normal. My Crucial chip works just fine on the fastest setting, with memory interleave enabled.

FWIW....BestBuy has 128MB PNY memory for $19 after rebate. It works fine on an I-Opener.

I'm, _already, starting, at the Slowest speed?? Sorry, if this is the right place, or, the Wrong place.. would you mind straightening me out.. Thanks much!

I just don't know what you mean by, CL2 and CL3 .. thanks

Redwood...Read over the topic Memory Interleave Revisited...everything I learned about memory settings is there, plus info by Programmer on the subject. If you get your chip working, post some benchmark scores. That'll help you achieve the best performance.

Just thought I'd offer my 2cents on memory experiences.

I have two friends who bought 128Meg RK-Byte SODIMMS from Best Buy for their I-O's.
Both had the same experiences. The machines crash constantly.

I bought 2 128Meg PNY SODIMMS from Best Buy for my I-O's (on sale for $19.99). Both machines are as stable as ever. This one right now has been on for 16 hours straight.

So, I'd have to say... stay away from RK-Byte ram.

Unit_1

FYI, you can get a SimpleTech 128MB SODIMM for $54.99 at costco.com, and there's a $50 rebate - I believe you need to be a costco member to get the deal, though.

I posted a link in the i-opener general forum.

I just used http://www.pricewatch.com and looked in the notebook RAM area - I entered SODIMM and 128MB in the search field and found some for $17.50 each at http://www.allstarshop.com They are Kingston 100MHz, so they should work great and have a lifetime warranty. Anybody know something that I am about to learn the hard way as to why these are so cheap compared to some of the prices listed here? Is it because of the retail vs mail order difference only?

Tink

Just verify that there are 8 chips on the sodimm (4 per side) and you'll be fine

Memory World has PC-133 256M sodimms for $35 plus $7 shipping/insurance. This is the 16 chip sodimms. Just got one in and it works fine in my I/O.

Their website is www.memoryworld.com, but it really sucks. Email is computersandparts@hotmail.com or phone 1-800-272-9578 or 1-215-364-9800

How much lower can memory go?
