Any Mac + IO (Unix) users out there? (IO connected to Mac?)
Any Mac and IO fans out there?

Hey guys...

In another topic, I realized that I wasn't the only one to avoid the whole Microsoft empire by being a Macintosh and Unix fan. (No flame wars, please - I'm not evangelising, just rapping about Macs with IOs...)

Normally I run a G4, without a PC, and I was wondering if I could flash my BIOS using Virtual PC or the like. Granted, the Mac/Linux community is far smaller than the PC/Linux community, but I was wondering if any of you have been brainstorming of ways to use both. Frankly, after I am able to flash my BIOS, I want to plug it into my hub as a Jailbait Linux terminal, with mklinux running on a few PPC and 68k machines running alongside it. The IO would do the trick for being a killer terminal for rlogin, et al... But again, maybe there's a quick way to use VPC on the G4 to flash the BIOS.... Hmmm....Any thoughts?

Cheers! - DocDoc

I've got a mac, but I don't see how it would fit in to flash your bios. You can pretty much flash without using any other computer 'cept an FTP site with the image and the qnxflash program to grab it from.

If you're running VPC, you might as well just get a real PC or at least treat the mac as if it were one.

Hello!
I'm a G4 user. I'd like to be able to set the ac up as an internet Server, have the IO login in either via a phone call or a direct modem to modem connect so i can download the flasher and bios. May be even send an image of the San disk over.

Since we are basicaly talking about comm software, I don't think it matters what comp you are using.

Any tips on setting this up? I have 4 IOs to flash. And I'm concerned about the updating NPL does (reportedly) when you go online via a diffeent ISP.

Thanks

Jerry

Maybe you wanna just go modem to modem...

here are some instructions for doing that. http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=technical&Post=613&Idle=&Sort=&Order=&Page=&Session=

Just replace the bsd computer with your g4. This assumes you're using ppp for the connection, but if you can't find ppp daemon for the mac, you can do a straight send using zmodem.. run a terminal program like proterm or zmodem or something.

There was a thread on doing this. There was also a thread on just capturing output into a file and going that way too...

read the list, you'll find all the info you need ol..

Just wanted to put in my word also. I have a Beige G3 running Mac OS 9 and LinuxPPC. I was hoping to be able to get a i386 RedHat cd and then just use my LinuxPPC redhat installer binary with the i386 installer files, etc. I'll post if it goes well. Otherwise, I'll just find a friend with a windblows machine and install it onto the drive there...
Anybody else done this?
