I went to http://www.mythtv.org .. Very interesting... I'm _trying to learn linux, Just to be able to fiddle with my tivo and replaytv. Lots of people (smarter than me!) are pushing the limits of the hardware... I could Never go back to regular commercial tv now.. lets keep this alive, I'd love to see how you manage.. btw, just saying, the CA tivo group, IS using the tivo without service.. now, I haven't read the thread, you need to have a CA email to join the group, thats Easy enough... but, like you, I think there are other ways to do this online, just a matter of finding it... I would suggest, get a Spare HD, backup yer original tivo system, then, have at it! Good Luck!
I just RE-read yer first post.. if you Haven't bought yet.. perhaps, get a first-gen Replaytv.. there is no monthly fee, and, the files are stored in usable format already.. my next Need is a Big@$$ HD to put in my Replaytv, to increase the hours...
all the info about saving files, etc, is on the avsforum .. I've fallen behind in reading, but, generally, you can do the same things with either machine, but, if you Have a video card.. and, Linux.. why not, just try the mythtv program? see how well it works... I remember reading a review of the new MSFT software on a new 'integrated home computer' hehe, just as the show was starting, it Blue Screened! hahaha, MSFT isn't _ready for Prime Time! In several years of use, I have prolly had _less than a handfull of glitches on any of my machines... Linux and TV is rock solid! ... now, if it Just _didn't take so dang much Reading to understand it all!
