Visions of a bunch of geeks invading the Microsoft Store at the Metreon with Linux-configged IOs. Mmmmm...

Anyone know any good surplus stores in the Bay Area? A scavenger hunt for drives, cables, laptop bits, fans, heatsinks, CPUs...

San Jose/Silicon Valley has a good amount of
surplus electronic and computer shops. There
is Disk Drive Depot, and Action Computing in Sunnyvale, almost right across Lawrence from
where Frys used to be. Also Halted Specialties, and many more that I'm aware of
down here.

Looking for people who want to get together
on sharing information on the IO.

Count me in. When/where?
I have 3 I need to flash, got the BIOS image, just no compatible motherboards to pop the chippie into.
Surplus sources:
Haltek (going out of biz soon, or may be already, move fast)
Weird Stuff Warehouse
Foothill College Ham/Electronics Flea Market
My friend Kevin's garage
Fry's (hey, most of the stuff you're buying has already been used, so it counts)

Why not meet at the Las Positas Computer/Ham fleamarket? First Sunday of each month. Its free too!

New MessageRE:IO- SF Bay Area ? (modified 0 times) Tackhead
Osuuma: Good idea. Ready access to parts, and far enough in advance we can plan for it. How 'bout a link from Mapquest and a suggested time to meet?

(Identifying ourselves should be easy, we'll all have these little laptop-looking things with penguins in the BIOS boot logo...)

New MessageRE:IO- SF Bay Area ? (modified 0 times) osuuma
Well, lets see. The vendors arrive at the fleamarket fairly early, the maximum people are there at about 9:00am. The vendors pack up at about 11:00am and the fleamarket closes at 12:00pm. When would be a good meeting time?

Here's the MapQuest map.

From the east bay area, go highway 580 east, past Pleasanton. Before you get to Livermore, take the Airway Blvd exit. Turn left. As soon as you pass the gas station, turn right. Go through two lights and the road becomes a T intersection. You'll see construction equipment. Turn left. Go about 500 feet and turn right to enter the college. Go straight through the stop, and then you'll see signs for buyers and sellers. Park the car. The flea market is in the parking lot.

From the central valley, go highway 580 west, past Livermore. Take the Airway blvd exit and turn right.

From the south bay, take 680 north to 580 east. DO NOT take 84 east to Livermore, you'll get lost and end up at a nuke power plant. Once on 580 east, use the east bay area instructions above.

It's pretty far inland. Go San Jose and take a looooong drive to the Northeast. Not exactly convenient for folks on the western side of the Bay, but anything's better than nothing!

EAK SF CA,

New MessageRE:IO- SF Bay Area ? (modified 0 times) Tackhead
I'd be interested in finding the Berkeley parts store too, just for my own interest.

Meanwhile, Cow Palace is pretty central, and there are also regularly-scheduled 'puter shows there. $3 with coupon from www.robertaustin.com

Hey, anywhere we can find piles of computer parts is fine by me :)

Has anyone found a good source (preferably local driving distance, like Jameco) for the 44-conductor, 2mm ribbon cable used in making the laptop cables? I know DigiKey sells a 500' spool of the stuff, but aside from the prefab kit makers, I haven't found any other sources in more appealing quantities. Otherwise... anyone wanna split the costs of a spool in Santa Clara?

Also.. what's the word on getting together in the local area to talk shop on these machines? Cow Palace? Hamfest? Private pizza/hacking party?

*Hmph*, if comp-usa would hurry up, i'd have my hands on one by now. I'm near Berekely and frequent the Vallejo show.
Send me an email, and we could hack our i-openers, once we all have them. Is anyone having the same problems with local compu-usa's?

I'm up for Cow Palace at the next show. I've got some spare 2mm parts as well. Probably a good idea for everyone who's into IO-hacking to bring any spare parts or leftover stuff for swap purposes. Whatever we still need we can hunt for at the show.

New MessageV3, anyone with compatible HDD? (modified 0 times) FunHack
I have tried to flush BIOS of V3 IO with QNX image on HDD.

All my IBM HDDs do not work.

Does anyone have old HDD for this end?
