New MessageNew York Freakin' City? (modified 0 times) Norman Conquest
I've finished the hard parts. Now I'm adding bells and whistles.

Still, it would be nice to have some company to say "Oh my God, don't put the soldering iron THERE" an instant after I've done just that.

BTW, still nothing at Union Square Circuit City as of noon today.

Cool....

I have 2 prepaid orders at CompUSA (37St & 5 Av). The sales rep said there will be some coming in this week, but no sign of it whatsoever.

For the gentlemen who bought his I-Opener at the 57 St. store, how did you get it? Did you prepay or just walked in? You must be one lucky dude.

Also, I checked the NYC reseller list from NPLI and a store called "RCS Computer Experience" is also selling the I-Opener.

I was wondering who else was responsble for the 200+ unit backorder at Circuit City on the East side. :)

Anyway, about RCS, i've been there once... the rep who may not actually know anything said that they only "advertise" the i-opener... you still have to order it directly from netpliance. There's a demo unit in the store, but no stock. This was the store by the Tourneau (and near the Sony Store). I haven't checked the one near Radio City.

It happens someone ordered three and took only two. even when the computer said 27 backorded the sales rep said I could have it. It was like mission impossible i did'nt beleave it until I was in the columbus ave. train station. Your right it was clearly luck.

BTW: I stopped in on Thur. none in yet. You just have to love these sales people. they do not listen. make them look. even when they none in stock, I made them look. I made a friend with sales rep, If it comes he'll call me.

New MessageAnything like a Fry's analog in New York City? (modified 0 times) djexplorer
OK, a pale imitation? Anything like??

For those that have never been in a Fry's (e.g. the Palo Alto one), I'm talking about an computer / electronics parts discount superstore. A Walmart of computer bits.

I don't know of anything remotely comparable in NYC. But I haven't looked too hard yet either.

All I know about is J&R and DataVision. Both of which have overpriced parts and bits and pieces. (Though J&R can sometimes be a good source for the big pieces.)

It's hard to believe that NYC is a total wasteland in this area???

Cables and Chips down on Fulton Street.
I have NEVER stumped these folks on a computer component.
The down side is they're only open Mon-Fri, 9-5ish (no weekends).
Also, they're a few flights up. You could walk right past and miss them easily.
Plus, they serve you from a counter. No browsing, which usually inspires me.

New MessageRE:New York Freakin' City? (modified 0 times) turtle
Cables and Chips on Fulton St in downtown Manhattan is very pricey. Their prices on SCSI cables are astronomical. I don't think there is a Fry's equivalent in NYC. I used to work for Intel in San Jose so I miss a place like Fry's. It's a great fealing to push a supermarket shopping cart up and down the aisles and pull motherboards, power supplies, hard drives, etc. off the shelves and throw them in your cart. Most of the stuff was OEM packaged (white boxes, no boxes, bubble wrapped, foil bagged, etc.) not at all like shopping at CompUSA.

Anyway, got CompUSA in Queens to sell me the demo unit after they got their first shipment (4 units) in last Tuesday and they DIDN'T CALL ME even though I had a backorder with them. Scraped off the epoxy and replaced the BIOS with one from BadFlash. Everyone works OK... just waiting for a local weekend computer show to pick up a 2.5 hard drive.

Turle, you my man!

Yeah, sadly, CompUSA seems like it and J&R are about all we really have for computer supermarkets in the City.

What are these computer fairs you are talking about re: picking up a hard drive. That's also the sort of thing I'm looking for. How do you find them?

Also, where did you find your cable, or have you yet?

The Tri-State computer fairs are ok. But I prefer the Market Pro fairs. They seem to be bigger and draw more vendors. Here's their website with schedule:

As for the cable I'm just building it myself with a length of cable and 3 connectors ordered from DigiKey.

Did you just stroll into CompUSA on 57th Street and buy it? Or did you have one on backorder and they called you to come in? Did they have any more left? Seems like the the stores in Queens and Long Island ignore backorders and just sell them out on the floor. I had to yell at management to get them to sell me the demo when I found out they sold my backordered unit out from under me.

Seems like I-Openers are trickling in to the NYC area.
I just picked up one on Saturday from CC in College Point, Queens.
There's a sticker on the box, with 4/25 on it, I guess that's the shipped date.
I have 2 more on order (different names) right after the 1st one.
(Same sale dude, had him place 3 orders with different names, address and credit card).
Original order was 3/19.

Hopefully I'll be able to pick up the other 2 next weekend.

Seems like this is version 3 of the iopener, can not log in to root at all
and won't let you bring up a command line prompt, once the demo starts.

Got the dremel tool to grind down the epoxy, then scraped off some more of the epoxy with a jeweler
screw driver, but it wasn't enough. As I tried the pop out the chip, I cracked the socket,
luckily it still works, but it gave me a big scare, as I got I black screen when I powered on the iopener...
but once the chip was out, I cleaned the edge of the chip and the socket,
popped the chip back in and back up it came :)

Messing with the WebSurfer is a whole lot easier...

I've also received my Virgin box today, 1 day earlier than I'm suppose to get it according to UPS's website.

All I need now is a MailStation and I'll have all the toys I need for this year or not... :)

Anyone see those eBillBoards LCD Ad panels around the city?
Like at newsstands, pizza joints, etc...
Will be nice to snag one of those to hack... see here-> www.ebillboards.com

I've modded 3 I-Opener's already and have one I keep open to re-flash BIOS's. I am willing to help anyone with a version 3 IO who has soldering skills to help me with my WebSurfer IDE hack (I'm OK at soldering - but LOUSY at surface mount parts!).

Would love to hook up with others some time! Lets get a group going!

CC never called me, I actually had an Apex DVD on special order on the same bill, and never got a call for that either. I've been going in to check every weekend. That store is full of idiots, when you call them to check, they tell you it's not in without taking you order code, and if you go ask them to check your order on the floor, they give you an attitude. The girls by at the service/pickup counter are much more curtious and they even smile... :)

Why not just use a ISA drive controller card and remove the metal slot thingie.
That way you still have the PCI slot open, unless you plan to max out the box and need both
the ISA and PCI slot along with the on board IDE connection.

What are you planning to do with your Web Surfer?
Share your ideas...

I have a 32" P-I-P TV, I figure I can surf during commercials and monitor the main channel.

My plan is to add a 2.5" drive connected to a ISA controller and use the PCI slot for Ethernet connection and still the have USB port free for other things, like video cam.

Okay - here's what info I have on CC @ Union Square.

They have recently received and distributed 37 IO's (or had orders cancelled). I pass there frequently and have been checking. The # of units backordered climbed to 169 before they stopped taking orders. About a week or so ago they told me when I checked at the pickup counter that there were something like 162 on backorder and thirteen shipping to them, according to the computer. They said they couldn't tell me where I was on the list but that I would get a call when my unit came in. I have been checking all week on the chance that there would be some in and I'd get someone who'd give 'em out first come-first serve. Didn't happen. As of this afternoon the backorder number is 132 with one in the shipping pipe. And again, we can't tell where you are in the list but you salesperson will call when we've got one for you.
I just hope the keep coming. I want one for my 70 year old uncle whose never going to use a computer. I've got a raincheck at CompUseless, hopefully I'll get that one to play with.

Has anyone else heard anything?

CheeseWiz -

Currently, I have the WS running with an ISA HD adapter and have a nice 2.5" 8gb hard drive inside - all closed up and running GREAT with 96mb RAM. Overclocked to 266 MHZ!!! and running perfectly stable!

I want to free up the ISA slot because I have an ISA adapter to link the WS to the 2Mbps wireless network in my home. The wireless network is hooked up to my DSL line and I want to be able to surf at high speed in the living room.

I tried a PCI HD adapter - but couldn't get it to work AT ALL. So if I free up the ISA slot - I'm all set! I have located a PCI adapter to hook my wireless PC Card too but it's backordered and possibly not available.

So when are we all going to get together and show each other our hacks and share parts/ideas/skills? I still have 1 of my 3 IOpeners open and able to flash BIOS's!!!!

Cubby-

I've read on the WebSurfer area of this BBS that PCI HD controllers do work. You just have to pull out the Disk On A Chip, which should be easy since it's socketed. If you've already tried that, then maybe the WS has a problem with using both the ISA and PCI slots at the same time?

Seems like more iopeners are rolling in.

I just picked up my other 2 I-Opener from College Point CC (Sunday).
Actually, my GF picked it up for me. She actually had to argue
with some loser clerk to get the 2 I-Openers. The dude said she was not suppose
to be able to buy 2, even though she had pre-paid for them in total on 2 separate
receipts with 2 different addresses and different credit cards.

The 1st one I got was a version 3 Iopener with regular screws.
Don't know about these new ones yet, but will post if they are diferent.

So, go claim your's before they sell it to someone else.
Oh yeah, they didn't call for the pick up either.

Been sitting on a paid special order for two since April 17, soon after it was announced that CompUSA was carrying them. I figured it would be way better to get in early in line at CompUSA than way late in line at Circuit City.
