I'm in Fresno (20 miles south of downtown Houston, 5 miles off 288)

I received my i-opener from CC last weekend. Due to obligations to Uncle Sam I've not yet ordered the rest(harddrive, cable, etc). Plan to do so next week.

My unit's IDE is intact, goo on the BIOS.

New MessageWilling to host, May 20 (modified 0 times) SpiceWare
I'd be willing to host a Houston get together. Only weekend free for me in the near future is May 20th, others are already booked. I'm south enough that the drive from Angleton wouldn't be too bad(exit Hwy 6, then 5 miles west)

May 20th should give everybody enough time to get their hardware together.

Has anybody found anyplace for parts in Houston? I've checked UBM and EPO for 44 pin IDE, but they didn't have any. I know MicroCenter has a decent selection of USB Ethernet adapters.

May 20th... Sounds good to me..

Only mod I've tried was to get it to dial my private ISP (orbitworld), with no luck. Possibly a user login issue, but not sure. I have 2 IO's. One untouched for reference and one that I am working on. I like it so far. Never thought I would learn so much about Unix in the process. Great educational tool..

You can get the 44 pin female connectors at

Ace Electronics
3210 Antoine Drive (Near Hwy 290)
Houston, Texas 77092

(South of Hwy 290..between Hempstead Hwy and 290)

You can also get a 40 pin ribbon cable that fits the connectors, you will have to split another 4 wires from another piece of ribbon cable to give you the 44. They also have
22 pin dual row male headers...you can take two and place them side by side to give you the 44 pin headers if needed.

Hope this helps.

Hey, I guess we were all fighting each other for the last few CompUSA units eh?

It turns out one of the Galleria CompUSA location's I-Os was misdirected to the Sugar Land CompUSA, not showing up on their computers, and luckily a sales associate remembered seeing one in the back. I believe I got the last one in the Houston area =)

Hey, does anyone want to take a crack at flashing my BIOS? I've tried the use-your-own-ISP hack and my weak-ass self now I want to put in a hard drive. I work in the Astrodome area, live in Sugar Land, anyone want to go to lunch sometime this week?

I got my grubby hands on an Iopener and a Websurfer, and I'm in the process of working on both of 'em. Count me in for the May 20th.

My Iopener is headed for duty as an MP3 jukebox & GPS system in my Jeep. I'm trying to figure out how to get it to work with a cellular modem, but no rush on that one, because I only have a 3 mile commute to work. I've got a 1.4 gb 2.5" drive & a generic fan installed just to get it running, and I'm looking for a huge drive to put in there instead.

The Websurfer is working as an MP3 jukebox in my living room, but I'm nowhere near impressed with it. The sound quality is fine, but fullscreen visualization plugins choke on Winamp. (I know, I know, move to Linux.) I've added an IDE controller, a 13.6gb 3.5" drive, and another 64mb ram, and the next step is to put it on my home network. Next weekend's project is to put a PCI nic in it.

I'm inside the loop, near the Galleria. If anybody wants to get together, let me know. I'll be out of town until Friday the 5th.

It'll be at my place, I'm about 20 minutes south of downtown, near hwy 288 and 6. I'll get a map ready sometime next weekend and post a link to it. I figure to start at 1pm.

Even though I've already got everything in for mine, I've not had time to work on it. I've been helping my mom, who's moved into my guest room for a few weeks, get their house ready to rent. My dad's job just moved him to Mexico for 3 years and she'll be joining him once some medical stuff is done with my grandpa.

I'll have a spare PC set up with a floppy, CD ROM, and a 2.5" drive adapter to make it easier to prep the OS. I've all the tools to get into and work on the iopener; however, I don't have anything to remove the epoxy. I've already run the QNX BIOS flasher so I don't need to remove the BIOS.

tomorrow (May 12) we're hosting a LAN Party to play Half-Life and Counterstrike... if anyone's interested send email to _kalbo_@yahoo.com. We're actually renting out a clubhouse for this

New MessageParty Problem (modified 0 times) SpiceWare
I've had some major dental problems this past week(shelled out over $900 so far and missed a week of work) that I'm not recovered from yet. I'm not going to be able to host the party this weekend. I figure we have 2 options:

1) somebody else host the party this weekend

2) wait a few weeks until I've recouperated and I'll host it.

05-15-2000 06:40:14

New MessageRE:what about houston? (modified 0 times) I-gotit
I could host it, but I just moved into this small apartment (650sqft) and I only got two chairs so far. If you think that's sufficient I can host it (Astrodome area). Otherwise we'll just wait.

I hope you'll get well soon!

New MessageNew date? (modified 0 times) SpiceWare
Well I've recouped pretty good, antibiotics are great, though I still have a numb jaw/cheek from the dental problems. Apparently all the swelling caused a nerve to get pinched. The dentist said it could take up to 6 months for it to recover, and even then it may not be totally back to normal. Oh well.

Anyway I figure now's a good time to figure out when we should reschedule. The dates I have open are the 3rd and 10th of June. Any preferences?

I just placed my order today at CC (should be in in about a weeks and the sales dude didnt know about any TOS.) You can also find them at a certian CUSA but i gotta buy 3 months of service at $21 per. Oh well. Today is 6-27-00. I missed the party. Scheduling another??

BTW, you can get a device SMALLER than the IO or websurfer (Celeron socketed) at EPO on Fondren for $199. It has ALL the ports including 100BT ethernet.

Only Bjoern showed up, so I doubt I'll offer to host another one.

We did the audio-out hack using the Op-Amp, capacitors and resistors. Get excellent sound when hooked up to the stereo.
