I just got my I-Opener today.

Hey, I live at Marsh and Trinity Mills! I go by your neighborhood at least once a day.

Has anyone picked up an I-opener locally? The CompuUSA's I've been to don't have any on display. I ordered from CC in Plano a month ago. I went by yesterday and they got 12 in last week. I was 16th on the list, so they said check back next week. I'm concerned about the letters going out to CC buyers, though.

Shoot, I went to the Beltline store a week ago and didn't see any. Did they ever have them on display or did they pull them from the back at your request?

i wasnt aware that compusa was selling them, i thought it was only circuit city.. i was in there getting something else when someone came up to the same counter i was at and requested 2 of them.

they went and pulled them out of the back.
then i got two, and someone saw mine, and they got two.
they were fiddling with a floor unit when they saw us getting them, dont know if they ultimatly set it up someplace.

Hey guys, I live in Euless. I'm an Intel rep, for the Addision stores.

Of all the store I've been to this week, your best bet to get the i-opener is at CompUSA on Beltline and Marsh. They say they have 9 sytems coming in this week. Shipments come in evey Wed. and Fri.

That is the only Compusa store that would let me pre-pay, I've been to other stores in Irving, Addision, and Hurst, and none would let me prepay.

BTW, anyone interested in starting a little i-opener users' group" (iud)

Looks like we have a few people around now.

I have a BIOS burner and the old bios if anyone has already removed the epoxy and needs the chip reflashed.

If you haven't yet removed the epoxy DON'T DO IT. There will be a software solution very, very soon.

Email me if you want to get together. (remove no spam)

I might have workable parts by next week sometime... perhaps.

Thanks for the tip, Nubie. I'll focus on that store, as well as CC where I have one on backorder.

I'm thinking about giving up, though. I'll soon be able to buy my old laptop from my employer for $250. Pentium 150, 48Mb, 1.2GB, CDROM, and a better LCD make it more attractive, I think. But I sure like the looks of the I-Opener.

I went to the north dallas beltline compusa today... the place looked like a chinese fire drill.
As the compusa central offices are located in dallas, and that particular store is the bigest in town, that is 'the' compusa... and there was an apparent convention of all the General managers...they were following each other around the store with clip boards, about 8 or so per isle.
I cant say if it was from nation wide, but there was at least 40 of them..

the people at that store tell me that they are 'pre-selling'.. and that they were getting some next week.
as i have 2, i didnt persue it... I was just checking if there were any there at the time.

Just called compusa to check up on the status of my io order. They said that they will call me when it comes in. The also said that I'm the only one who has pre-paid for it.

If you're looking for an i-opener....Compusa #138 on beltline and Marsh has it coming in, there are 8 available (on order, but not arrived).

Well, a while back i had made an order at CC, but due to the long wait, i had canceled it... Then i found someone who worked for Netpliance, and had gotten a free unit, which he didn't use, and he sold it to me for $100

I messed around with QNX, then i built my cable, got a 120MB HD from an old dead laptop, and got it to boot win95. Placed an order for tennmax's new i-opener cpu fans, and ordered a 1 gig drive from global micro. and they should both show up friday when i get to work. and hopefully saturday, i will go looking for somethin gto build the HD mount with... anyone know a good hobby store in the Dallas?

The rest will just be cool hacking stuff, so in a few weeks we can have a little get together somewhere in dallas to show off our units... where would be a good place?

No more prepaying CompUsa #138 on Beltline and Marsh,
until they have gotten their 9 on order delivered and
they order more.

Reason:
When I hit the counter their inventory was at -6.
A fella in front of me prepaid for two of them,
which put the inventory to -8. Then I prepaid for one, inventory at -9.
They have 9 on order. They stopped taking prepaid orders right after me.
They actually had to doublecheck before letting me prepay and then
they said I got the last prepayment order for this shipment, god knows
when it arrives though...

Stone,

Good thing you got there as soon as you did. I didn't think there would be any left by the time I picked up mine.

Now, they said it would be there in two weeks. They said this last week. So that means it should be here next week...hopefully...ya right.

New MessageRE:North Texas (Denton, DFW) User Group? (modified 0 times) stone
Well,
I seriously doubt compusa actually knows when their iopener shipments
arrive. The business relationship between netpliance and compusa is so
new that they must rely on guesswork. So when a customer asks when they
can expect the product to be in, they just throw in a generic figure
in a week or two, which is a long enough time for most any regular goods
to be shipped... I dont think they realize how big the iopener demand
has gotten due to hackability. One doesn't have to be a rocket scientist
to do a little math: Buy as many as you can for $99 (+tax) and resell
them on ebay for twice the money. Can't beat that.

I just want one of them for my personal toy and I refuse to contribute
to a bloodsucker on ebay. Money is not an issue, just the principle.
I hope I get one that is hackable before they (netpliance) fold
and if I don't ... oh well life goes on.

So was anyone here planning on a get-together? Perhaps in a month or so :)

Ya I think getting together could help us all out. Mabey try to hack ours at the same time

I know what you mean about people buying them and then selling io's on ebay. There was a post in this newsgroup where this guy said that he was buying all he could ( 4-6 at a time) and then turning around and selling them for profit on ebay. He said with the profit he made, he bought one for himself.

I can understand making profit and such, but that really annoyed me. There's a shortage, and people are scarfing them up and not plan to use them. When there's a chrisis, it's illegal for companies to raise prices on necessities, like ply-wood...this too should apply to the io.

Too bad we can't call this a national crisis, then we could get gov't funding

Thanks to GlobalMicro, i am still waiting for my hard drive that i ordered from them. On the 18th of April i ordered a 1 gig 2.5 ide drive from them, and specified a different shipping address than my billing address (since i can't take a day off to sit at home waiting for a deliviary) and paid for next day deliviary.

Wednesday came, no package... so i call them, and they tell me that they were backed up, and they will ship it "today".

Thursday came, no package... called again, and they tell me that my package "threw up a red flag since the shipping and billing address were different", they asked me to verify the information, and then said that they were going to ship it "today".

Friday came, no package... i decided maybe its a holiday for the shipping company and they can't deliver it.

Monday came, no package... i called again, and they say that they didn't have some of their drives, and that they did have mines and they assured me that it will ship "today"

Tuesday came, no package... i called once more and the guy apoligise and said that he will take the package down to shipping himself and make sure it goes out "today".

Wednesday came, no package... i called once more, and they put me on hold for a long while while they try to "find" my package, then they get back on the phone and tell me that he have to go and see if it shipped and will call me back. A few mins later he calls and tell me that it was shipped yesterday, and gives me a FedEx tracking number, so i asked him, that if it was shipped yesterday, why didn't i have it as yet since i paid for next day service, and all he could say is that it "should" be there "today". So i get home, and what do i see on my door? a FedEx tag saying they tried to deliver my package and that i wasn't home... no ####? thats why i gave them a SHIPPING ADDRESS! cause I unlike most people have to be at work during the day. so now i have to find a way to get FedEx to deliver my drive to my work, lets see how long this simple task takes.

dont feal alone in this...
2 weeks ago i ordered my cable and bracket... it was sent via ups ground...
using the tracking number i watched it slowly cross the country.

then, ups looses it in the distribution center in msquete.. its been 5 days since that happend.
i have 2 perfectly adequate i-openers waiting for $30 worth of parts...
it looks like it will be another week before i can get those parts again.. if ups cant find all 1 pound of package they lost.

I'll be able to say 'i've had i-openers for 5 weeks'... but i dont know how well they work :<

So is anyone in the North Dallas/Plano/Carrolton/Addison/Richardson etc going to meet?

I have my IO, cable, bios already flashed. But I can't seem to get any 2.5" hd's to auto detect in the BIOS, and if I manually enter the settings, I get "primary HD fail" msg or a "please insert system disk" error. I'd appreciate any help. Greetings fellow Dallas-ites.
It looks like several of us are in the same area. I live on Midway at the George Bush Turnpike myself. I ordered my I-opener directly from Netpliance on 3/21/00, and I received it approximately 5 days ago (v3.) I haven't done much to it yet, aside from opening it and removing the heat sink. I am thinking about going with the velcro method, rather than trying to cram a $150 laptop drive into the case. If anyone has found cheap 9.5mm drives locally, then I might be pursuaded otherwise... The only cheap 9.5mm drives that I have found are under 1GB.

I bought a 9.5mm drive from Buy.com. It was far from cheap, but it's the right size. 6.4G for $149, no $5 shipping (including one other part), no tax. That might sound like a lot, but it feels better to me than spending $75 to get 1G or less.

Hey Tyler, I live in AMLI of North Dallas. You must be right around the corner.

I ordered my i-opener on 3-17 and it languished for weeks until finally on one of my phone calls they read me the new TOS. I said I wanted to think about it and went on a business trip. When I got back it was waiting for me inside the door.

When the charge showed up on my credit card for the ISP service I called to complain and tell them I wanted to ship the i-opener back. Before I could tell them I wanted to return it she said that I was exempt from the new TOS because I had ordered and paid for it before 3-31-00 (even though it showed up in late April.

I have my hard drive but I haven't gotten around to ordering my TennMax or Mod2 kit. I paid $149 for the 6.4 gig HD at Buy.com.

When is a good time for anyone to hook up or is everyone dialed into the hockey series right now?

I have the lasagna fan and mod2 kit for the i-opener. There is absolutly no way that I am going to get my i-opener from compusa (compusa said that they will fire any manager who sells the iopener without the tos)

I'll sell you the lasanga and mod2 kit for the same price you you get it. The advantage is you wouldn't have to wait a month for the lasagna and mod2 kit to arrive...

New MessageBIOS burning party. (Late this week or next) (modified 0 times) Simmons
Sorry for the delay in answering, I've been off the BBS for a while...

If anybody wants to get together for a BIOS burning party in Denton, let me know. I can have a meeting either this Thursday or Saturday evening, or possibly next Thursday or Saturday (July 13 or 15, or July 20 or 22) EMail me at simmons1.maps@on.directlink.net (.maps on. is "no spam" backwards, remove it.) I will set the party up for the most popular day and post it here. Anyone interested must email me to get directions.

I won't be charging anything to burn the chip, but I also won't be messing with any epoxy. I have the proper PLCC tool to remove the chip, and a version one BIOS image with and without the BIOS logo. Just make sure that your I-Opener has no epoxy on the chip and that it is in working condition BEFORE you bring it up to Denton.

Tanner Electronics ( http://www.tannerelectronics.com/ ) probably still has some 2.5" IDE cables (~$5) and the extra connector (~$2) that is needed. Visit their website for a phone number and directions to the store. They also have a very nice bright orange LED (~$.50) with a resistor already soldered in place for an IDE activity indicator. The keyboard splitters that they have do NOT work, but they have a USB mouse (~$10) that works great.

The screwdriver needed to remove the bases on the new machines is a #8 security Torx. I don't have one, but I -might- have one in time for the meeting. If you have one, bring it.
