Seattle area IO hackers LOOK HERE!

New MessageSeattle area IO hackers LOOK HERE! (modified 0 times) FoOl

Hey all Seattle hackers,
Let's see about getting together and coming up with some NEW ideas for our hacked IO's. We could share parts that we got laying around and talents. Just think, person a can write code, person b is a EE, the two together can make ideas come true. Let's face it there are one hell of alot of smart ppl in this area, we can come up with some great stuff.

Hell we might be able to just flash bio's for now, but next month we may have a device for taking over those fabled iridum birds over.

Info and Technofusion,

Are your bios chips still in need of reprogramming?

I was to reprogram my orginal 39020 chip. The three 28020's I had were 150ns chips and did not work in the i-opener after programming.

I have been unable to connect with my bud with the inverter, but if you guys are in a bind we can work something out.

04-15-2000 15:39:59

New MessageChips were 29020 (modified 0 times) BMan
The three chips i mentioned in my previous post were 29020s at 150ns not 28020s.

Not in it for the money. A microbrew should cover it.

A friend and I just got BIOS flashing with an eeprom burner working. So I'm thinking of setting up some kind of flashing party. We all get together in a cafe, I bring flash equipment, we liberate some iopeners and generally have fun. Email me at iopener@hesse.grendel.cx if you would be interested.

New MessageRE:Seattle area IO hackers LOOK HERE! (modified 0 times) Technofusion
Sorry to hear the chips you bought didn't work. Any new ideals. Can we get our hands on the same chips that ship in the IO?
Getting together to flash chips is a great ideal. Any votes on where to meet gfish? Need to get Info and MountLake Terrace man in here.
I have tools for getting epoxy off, Dremel motor, dental picks, PLCC puller. Getting good at this. I've done two with no failures. If we get a place to do this we could also do a remove epoxy party.

I am preferential to the Capitol Hill area, if only because I happen to live there. It also has a plethora of cafes and is pretty central to all the satellite urban areas.

I've had two people mail me expressing interest so far. Unfortunately Thursday, Friday and Saturday are very bad for me. Anyone interested in showing up Sunday night?

For those of you interested in upgrading your processor -

Hard Drives Northwest (Lynnwood) has (1) K6-3 (400) w/256k L2 cache remaining in stock, at $79. I've called shops from one end of the Puget Sound to the other, and this is the best price I've found.

You'll need the $40 Universal Voltage Regulator to support the 2.4v core/ 3.3v I/O requirement for the chip. Also, a cooling solution akin to the Tennmax Iop will be a must.

The Bellvue location no longer stocks this chip.

Contact Info -

Good luck!

Yes, and they have the wonderful B&O coffee house. ..white chocolate moca please..

I got epoxy and chip removal tools
1. Exacto Knife kit
2. Dental Pick set
3. Dremel Motor (batt)
4. PLCC chip Puller
5. Microtorch (portable)
6. Head visor Magnifing glass
I've done two now with no f*ck ups.

Cables:
1. Vacu Vise.
2. Redmond Cable is 5 minutes away can come with parts.
3. 2.5 to 3.5 Hard Drive Adapter. (for loading initial os on hd).

Food:
1. Girlfriend who can cook great eggrolls.

Gonna need somewhere large enough to meet. Any nominations? I live in a one bedroom apt so it ain't even big enough to host an i-opener party. Probably want to keep it central to everyone, oh Capitol Hill is central but parking sucks!

Why not meet at SpeakEasy in Belltown? They've got plenty of room and a computer friendly staff. Plus they serve both coffee and beer! Just need to find a night when there isn't a performance.

Hi from Olympia.
I emailed Speakeasy about using their facilities for a meeting. Seems the backroom is setup for ART? Might want to look elsewhere. Haven't heard back yet.

I'm to damn impatient to wait. Went ahead and flashed mine after obtaining an Abit BH6 board today. Hard to find these dam things. Flashed the bios and I'm now running Win98 on my i-opener. Removing the epoxy and flashing only takes me 5 minutes. With a Dremel and pin point heat the epoxy comes right off. Got the flash stuff down pat now also.

Anybody need their bios hacked?

04-19-2000 22:22:38

New MessageRE:Seattle area IO hackers LOOK HERE! (modified 0 times) BMan
Technofusion,

Glad you were able to get your bios reflashed. I still plan to grab the programmer for use over the next three days.

Dan J.

Where are you located? I'm in the northend. Maybe we can connect and get you taken care of.

New MessageRE:Seattle area IO hackers LOOK HERE! (modified 0 times) Technofusion
BMan,
I have possible three more units to program. Although doing it on a mobo is possible it's not as easy to do on a burner. I still want to get together and help others remove the goo. I've also got an adapter for 2.5 drives. If they bring a drive and CD they can setup their OS as well. Dang all we need is a place to meet large enough to hold several people with a work table and electrical outlets. Speakeasy never got back. I'll check the phone book for places.

Try a community center. I called mine, told them I was a member of a SIG, and that our membership (of about 10) might be interested in using a room there. She said it wasn't a problem, room rentals are around $25 an hour, and are available Fri, Sat & Sun.

It's way the hell up north, however, and a central location seems to be a must for this group.

Try the county and city park systems. In particular "Less Grove" park in Auburn has a small rec hall with limited cooking facilities, tables, power etc. for $3.00 per hour (anyway that is what I payed two years ago). Weekends are pretty much booked a year in advance, but week day evenings are another story.

On another subject; has anyone gotten an I.O. from the Lynnwood CC (purchased after 3/23)?

Not to start a slam fest on CC but I've been to the CC store in the Crossroads mall several times over the past year. Everytime, because of the sales staff, I wind up walking out angry and purchase nothing! Not to mention their prices are hellishly high. I usually goto Video Only for all my electronic purchases.

Well it seems my post got munched.. oh well..

I was basically giving myself an intro. I'm in the Cap Hill area of Seattle .. I've been to the CUsa in Bellevue with not luck on IOs (don't think they'll be selling them anymore there).. Havn't been anywhere ele due to lack of transporation and nightshift schedule. I've broken down and bought one from NTPL (or whatever the shortcut is)... but I rather would like to play with one now, instead of 3 month (+ shipping) time.. I'm planning on making a touch-screen pad IO that uses LTSP stuff to connect to my network, so any mods are unnessecary for the finished product ...

Is anyone in the area fed up with their or would like to sell it at a decent price? (saaay.. < $150)

have fun, and happy hacking

New MessageRE:Seattle area IO hackers LOOK HERE! (modified 0 times) Gar.........
I have a V1 "demo" that I have not done anything with yet (Except peak under the memory cover to check for epoxy and there is NONE...It is as I bought it.

I'll be honest...I have mixed feelings about letting this go it as a real hassle getting this one...But $ 200.00 I guess would be worth it. That's what it is worth to me. I did have plans on giving this to a kid but decided to give a full size pc instead... that's costing more but less hassle with CD's and restoring deleted/lost files...

I too have one "last one" on order and may not ever see it but have (2) V-2's up and running Win98....

Actually, you didn't miss it. (Or you did, thanks to the editing monster.)

The Concept MFG adapter, sadly, does not work for the K63. However, the Powerleap K63/98 does. Unfortunately, it must be ordered & shipped directly from Taiwan. ($99 each)

Capitalize on your Seattle location. Come be one of the first to see the ePodsOne. http://www.epods.com

We are inviting people to come and provide feedback about our device. We will be doing the typical ePodsOne introduction and overview, but then tear it open for your prying eyes.

The date is Tuesday, June 27th at 6:00 PM.

Space is limited so tell us why you would like to attend.

Pizza and pop will be provided.

Hey, looks interesting ePods QA... Basically a bigger version of the H/PC CE device.

Can CE be upgraded on the ePods, or will I be stuck with 2.11/permanent rom if I buy this?
What sort of ram is being used? Sodimm, Dimm, or compactflash/smartmedia? Is it upgradeable?

All in all, not too bad for the price, competitive with other H/PCs even including the service.

Anyone in the Seattle/Redmond area willing to assist a newbie? I just got an IA-1 with BeIA v.1. Ran fine until i programmed in the dial up number, user id and password. saved changes and tried to dial up. modem did not connect after 3-4 tries. here's the newbie part--thought maybe it needed to reboot to recognize the changes so i unplugged, waited a little, then plugged in. now i get either the compaq black screen or stinger will run, i see the Be v.1 loading screen, it makes the short "welcome" sound and then I get a white screen with the pointer finger frozen in the middle. no keyboard keys work except power which, if i hold it down for several seconds, will essentially restart the IA-1. This is usually where i get the compaq black screen. i can get into bios and have tried different things there (although on some of them, the f10/compaq button does not work to accept the changes). Same results everytime so far. Ideas? Suggestions? Someone who has a flashed BeIA image (or other image that will work) that I can borrow? thanks.
