hello, anyone within San Jose want to join up for a IHacking meeting? Is there a user group already in this vicinity? I was thinking we can meet up at a library or something. Thanks!

Hey Kenny, I am in the same boat as you. have you checked out hardrive depot? They have tons of cheap notebook hardrives. What's your email?

I'm in Sunnyvale. I've modded a V3 using the QNXFlash drive image, and have loaded Jailbait 6. I've also got a pair of V2's that I'm waiting for the replacement cases from http://www.mainstreettech.com -- those will be getting notebook CDRom drives as well as notebook HDs, and one of 'em will likely wind up being a cheap and expendable webserver.

HD Depot's notebook drives aren't very cheap. They're refurbs, and the for the $$ they're asking for the 6Gig models, you can get a new (maybe refurb?) 12Gig from buy.com. The 1-2Gig models at HD Depot are fairly cheap, though -- $45-$60 or so.

If anyone wants to get together to flash the BIOS without removing the BIOS chip (using the HD Image technique), drop me an email at wild_pencil@yahoo.com -- I've got a hard-drive already set up for that task, and it's lying around here somewhere. If you don't have a hard-drive or your IOpener cables, I can dump Jailbait 6 onto your SanDisk -- at least that'll turn it into a decent X-Terminal with Netscape until you get your hard-drive parts ready to go.

Hey Wild Pencil, if I can't flash the bios on my abit can you help me out? Do you know anywhere local where I can get the ide cables? My email is cyberwarrior2k@yahoo.com. Thanks!

I bought my connectors from Jameco, in Belmont. They dont seem to sell the ribbon cable. I bought that from badflash.com for $2 +$1 for shipping.
Now if I could only find a drive that works I think I would be set.

Hey Kenny G, Is that the only place nearby that you can get it? Why don't you use a normal 40 pin cable and shred it by wire. DO you know any local place near Santa clara to get it?

The regular 40-pin IDE type cable i found a bit too thick to go in the 44-pin connectors required for the i-opener. When I joined paypal I was given a $5 credit, so infact the cable didnt cost me anything. The connectors were about $1.25 each from Jameco. I tried Frys, CompUSA, and a couple of local computer shops before going to Jameco, and badflash.com.

My desktop has a different BIOS chip to the I-opener so unfortunately I cant flash it that way. I was hoping that my IBM DVAA-2810 HD from my old laptop would be sufficient to flash it, but it seems not to work, so I am looking for someone who has a different laptop HD.

Hey Kenny, I can flash your Bios for you if you can help me get the cable set up. Give me an email at cyberwarrior2k@yahoo.com if you're interested. MY abit flashed mine fine.

You can get the connectors from Jameco, but (as someone pointed out) they don't sell the ribbon cable. Go figure. You can get the ribbon cable from DigiKey, in 5-foot or 10-foot lengths:

5ft Part# AM44G-5-ND
10ft Part# AM44G-10-ND

The 44-Pin connectors are also listed in the same PDF page, if you haven't ordered them yet. That might come in handy for the $25 minimum order.

I'm probably going to order a handful of the 10-pin headers (MSA10A-ND, or MSE10A-ND with strain-relief) for the VGA-Out and COM2, as well as some DIP-Switches (CT2184LPST-ND) so I can tweak the CPU settings. And top it off with the USB receptacle (WM17100-ND) and other needed resistors to get the 2nd USB port working.

By the way, Action Computers (on Lawrence Expwy nr Arques) sells the security torx driver kit for about $8 or so. It works perfectly.

Thanks wild pencil, I think I might just order the cable from an online vendor. 25 buck minimum huh. I was fortunate to have the io with screws on the back vs. torx. Only the stand had torx. The ratshack screwdriver for 1.69 worked great. I flashed my bios with my abit last night so the only thing I need are the cables and the HD. HardDrive depot sucks huh? Hmm, know anywhere else I can get a cheap hd???

I wouldn't say HD Depot sucks.. just that they're not realistic when they're trying to sell 6Gig Refurbs for near the price of a new 12Gig. Their smaller sized drives are competitively priced, though.

I've got a whole bunch of stuff coming in from DigiKey soon, so hopefully I'll be able to make my IO Cables by the weekend. Right now, I'm using a cable and adapter that lets the IO use 3.5" drives in an external enclosure.

I'm seeing a lot of wants of people wanting this or that. perhaps we should have a hackfest one night and everyone brings their IOpener and those that have done them can teach and those that are new can learn. Sound good? If we need a place we can use my two bedroom apartment. (I live in santa clara) Email me and I will set up an informal list. (note: I haven't gotten my IOpender yet - so I can't help with questions just yet. Still catching up on the reading material, etc.)

Later,

Is there anyone around yet ? :)
I am in Sunnyvale and still reading.. My IO isn't doing anything for the moment
because it is not hacked yet. I hope badflash would be still around when I
finally hack it. BTW I may be able to flash it with a ROM writer at work if
I get the image.. Only if I get the image. :)

The secure torx was OK with just a little screw driver from eye glasses repair
kit. And then, the other screws fit to that although the other screws are
a bit too short. I got mine in October, 2000 and it doesn't have any epoxy in the BIOS.
has RISE 266 and IDE connector is intact.

Yeah, here's one more.
Ping delay seems to be really horrible especially when I am using SBC Yahoo DSL. :)
I even have couple of webpals to be hacked.. and I am going to bring one more possibility up.. somewhere. but not sure where. :)
