Quiet fan with no case or shield cutting
Quiet fan with no case or shield cutting

I have a relatively quiet, fan-cooled i-opener with NO drilling or cutting either the fan, the metal RF shield, or the io's plastic case. What was my solution? I went down to Ratshack, er Radio Shack, and purchased a package of "Self-Sticking Cushion Feet" (Radio Shack part number 64-2346). I used four of the puppies, sticking them to the top of the fan (after you mount it of course) at the four corners, taking care not to obstruct the fan flow. The self-sticking cushions actually fit just right on the corners. This literally forces space in between the fan and the metal RF shield, but not with so much force that you're damaging the fan, CPU, or motherboard. The space is just enough to quiet the fan down to what you would expect on any desktop computer; in fact, it's just a bit quieter than my regular desktop computer. Reattaching the metal grill should be done with care; you have to push it just a bit to get it in position for reassembly with the regular IO screws. That's about it! The back of my unit looks perfect, with no messy cutting, etc.~! (If you know what to look for, you'll notice a slight bowing-out of the case right where the fan is, but that would be missed if you weren't inspecting carefully.) Anyway, I love my solution best of any I've considered so far. The cost is $1.19 for a package of 12.

Another solution:

"Day 6 - adding a fan"

This solution gives me temperatures of around 46C on a WinChip 200 (66.6*3) at high CPU loadings. It's extremely quiet (much quieter than the hard drive), and also involves no case cuts.

For my box, it's fine, but I'm not sure I'd recommend my solution for those of you running hotter CPUs. If you need the extra cooling, get a fan that gloms straight onto the CPU. I like the "feet" idea - cushioned feet will make no vibration noise whatsoever. I had to spend a bit of quality time with a hot glue gun to get the same effect...

Very cool pics! I downloaded them all for reference when I get my IO.
Finished my nice webplayer, with the help of my websurfer. Im sure it
will come in handy with the D.O.C in the IO.

One of the big problems with this is it ends up recirculating warm air inside the box. Cutting the RF shield allows a little more cool air to enter from the outside. (the fan sucks in case anyone wonders).

With the K6-III+ at 400-450Mhz there is a lot more wattage in the box that needs to get out.

Any of you electronically inclined people know what would happen if I supply a 12 volt fan with only 5 volts from the IO?

Will it just not run or is a there more potential for damage to the system?

TIA

To cool my 2 iopeners, i soldered a radioshack 12v regulator to the back of the power connection, fits in perfectly with the heatsink tab facing away from the logic board and the pins bent, this places the heatsink right against the inner shield eliminating any heat problems(add a little heatsink grease). i then soldered a 5v pc mount relay (also from radio shack) to the +5v and gnd pins on the second serial port header <fill in boring wiring here> and, voila, a 12v source that's only on when the iopener is on, i got lazy and bought cheap fans and cut a hole right through the rf shield and case back, the radio and tv usually suck anyway. I can post pictures if anyone wants them.

hturany,
A small 12v (CPU) fan will just run slower in most cases but still should provide good cooling depending on type of cpu and what speed it's running at. The current draw of the fan may be a little higher running at 5v.
I'm not sure how much extra stress it will place on the i-Opener mainboard voltage supply though...Guess it will depend on your configuration. Mostly type of CPU.

Tackhead,
I am kinda new at this thing and have a version 3. I like the setup that you have and was wondering where you got the connector and ide out things as said in Day nine of your yahoo pictures. I have used your other mods and like you ideas.

The IDE-out connector (male 40-pin IDC, .100" pitch) came from a surplus store - it was attached to a length of standard ribbon cable, and there were several connectors on it.

I'm pretty sure there's an equivalent in Digi-Key somewhere.
