FLashed OK, but won't boot
Can't get windows to boot

I purchased my cable. I flashed the bios and it said it went OK.
I loaded windows98 onto my IBM laptop HD model #DSOA-20810 and it boots fine when I put it in my PC. When I put it in the IO I get the new logo screen then an error stating "Disk boot failure.Insert system disk and press enter"

I have tried the different master/slave jumper configs and with it set as master is the only way it will even recognize the HD when I press tab during boot up. Any other configuration and it doesn't find the HD.

Use Fdisk And Make Sure The Partion Is Active....
You Can Only Have One HD Connected To The Computer When u Do This So Make Sure You Have A Boot Disk With Fdisk On It..

well I know you bought your cable and all but they can still be defective. so, assuming you have the drive set to active and properly formatted and partitioned, that would be the next thing to look at.

I had the same problem that was fixed with changing the bios settings for the IDE HD. Auto setting did not work for me. I think I used LBA. But with different HDs differnet bios settings worked.

I am no expert in partitioning HD's. When I did it originally, I accepted the default or first option. I think it said create an primay Dos partition. Since then someone told me to try something like Fdisk/wsr or some command at the end. I don't remember exactly. But it didn't do anything.

Would it work fine in my PC and not in the IO if the partition was not right?

This is a really common problem with the I-O. There are lots of combinations that you need to try unless someone tells you how to set up that particular drive. If you are getting the boot disk failure the cable is probably OK, but the drive isn't set up correctly. Some work with AUTO, others LBA, etc. I had to try about 16 different things on one toshiba drive before it would boot.

Be sure you are using an older AWARD bios on the host computer. I am unsure of why, but my newer computer can't be used to set up I-O drives, but my old pentium pro with a '98 bios works like a champ.

I have yet to figure out a formula, but I have yet to find a drive that can't be set up.

You're probably thinking of 'fdisk /mbr' (Master Boot Record).

This didn't help me. I did use gdisk (norton?) and set the drive to active. I was also able to get fdisk to work only by ripping out all other disks in my pc so that the iodisk-to-be was the only hard drive and then to boot off the floppy and run fdisk /mbr and set the partition active.

There is a guy, Dadr, who has the same drive. His post said what settings. I tried the settings and I get the same problem

Jwalter,

I am using a 12GB IBM. I notice that you mentioned using the Create Primary Partition option under Fdisk. You may want to use the Change Current Fixed Disk Drive option to your laptop drive, and then choose Display Partition Information.

If an A is not present under Status, you'll need to make your drive active.

Hook your drive back up to the computer as the primary master, boot off a startup disk, and use FDISK to create your active partition.

Good luck!
