wireless k/b and mouse built into iopener

i am going to hack an iopener pretty soon, and i was wondering if there is enough extra room inside the iopener to put the receiver boxes for logitech wireless keyboard and wireless mouse (or the guts from inside them) inside the iopener. I thought it would be pretty cool to not have any wires around the iopener, just one going to the wall. If that won't work, then would it be possible to put a little infrared receiver on the front for an IR wireless kb. thanks : )

ITKid,

If it's anything like the compusa wireless keyboard I hacked, it shouldn't be too hard to place the pcb from the receiver inside the iopener, and run some wires from the ir receiver pads on the board to the hot-glued ir bulb at the front of the case.

You may have to remove the modem though, if you're planning to secure it to a standoff.

Have fun,

Kudzu :)

Yes, there is enough space to put the receiver in the case. I know, I have one, but I chose not to keep it in the case.

I hacked the iOpener keyboard cord to the Logitech receiver so I have a short little "dongle" for the k/b + mouse. I can still unplug the wireless and plug in a splitter w/ k/b + cuecat + mouse and use my cordless desktop on my laptop (same kind of PS/2 combo port as on the iOpener).

You might have to worry about the RF interference from inside the iOpener, and extend or otherwise hack the change channel button and LEDs to put it inside.

I failed to mention I have the RF Logitech Cordless Desktop. I think the other, more recent Cordless Desktops are also RF. I would recommend RF over IR simply because I DON'T have to worry about line-of-sight.

I recommend the Silitek SK-7100 wireless IR keyboard. They are tiny have side handles for armchair surfing, quick buttons and built in pointing stick which is awkward for the first month. I am using this board ona day to day basis. Also they are quite stylish in a charcol black/grey. The keystroke is similar to a notebook. The product is sold as an Airboard. They also havesome lovely RF wireless keyboards.

I also have on of those Silitek IR wireless keyboards. I don't worry to much about line of sight, It's vision it is real good and directing/reflecting the beam off of the walls or ceiling works great! The room I use it in is painted white so that offers excellent reflective properties but any light colors should be fine.
<Tip> for some improved sensitivity, lay down flat a small 2" x 3" mirror face up directly in front of but below the red window (So it does not block vision) of the IR receiver. This will provide a wider vision for the receiver of the mid to upper wall/ceiling area.

BTW believe it or not I got the keyboard for free at a major retail outlet {no rebate either}.

I don't use the keyboard for the i-Opener though. Heck with that small screen on the i-Opener (most of us can not read it from very far) you are close enough that one should not have a problem with the reciever capturing enough IR signal.

Warp7:

The usefulness of a wireless solution can be explained in two words: "MP3 Jukebox". *grin*

(Actually, maybe two more - "Car GPS" - another situation where the less cable you've got, the better.)

Tackhead,
You are right about Car GPS, I totally spaced that one, Been taking Dr. prescribed perkecets and they kinda leave me in the ozone layer ... Having the keyboard wireless makes it easy to stow or just toss in the back seat when done using it.
I am just about done getting all the parts together to finish a i-Opener GPS/auto PC combo. I could of really used it today!
Found a fairly stiff 20" semi flexable black gooseneck at Good guys for $15 bucks. Was part of a mobile CD stand selling for $40 bucks but pieces were missing from the box.
I'm planning on taking out the battery from a extra UPS I'm not using to use for 12VDC source/backup and have a trickle charge connection to the car battery (Sears diehard smart battery with autosense low voltage turnoff so I'm not worried about a dead battery from this connection) The UPS battery should also work as a filter/spike protection? (Starting the car with i-Opener on)and also in case I shut the ignition off too soon... I think someone had an idea I liked about using the mini SCSI-2 50 pin connectors, one on back of the i-Opener and SCSI-2 (Scanner?)2'-3'interface cable to mount the hard drive in a seperate enclosure and place it under the seat w/foam.....Added Vibration Shock protection?

Hmmm,
Maybe leave the inverter attached to the UPS and run the i-Opener off of 120VAC using it's wall wart...Should last several hours fully charged...
