Ok. I have just bought (I Think I'm pretty sure...)a V1 IOP on ebay (labeled as REFURBISHED ),have been searching through the posts, followed a LOT of links etc. After a couple of day's worth of information overflow I need some advice, Please!
The plan is to install the IOP in my car to provide an MP3 player as well as GPS navigation, on Win98.
To accomplish this I know I have to perform the Audio and Serial port hacks as well, but I got lost with modifying the unit to be able to use a NORMAL IDE hard drive. With Codeman being behind schedule and all the negative posts regarding the waiting time I'm even more in the dark.

Which is the best mod to buy/perform if I want to add an External 30G Western Digital?
Codeman/Badflash/Wiztronics ? any other?

Nobody (CompUSA, Micro Center and Computer Show)seems to carry 44 pin IDE cables. Where do I get these if I plan to make the cable myself?

Any advice would surely be appreciated. Thank you/

general stuff.

the v1 will have a winchip in it, you should replace it with a winchip 2, unless you want to go through the split plane voltage mods.

cables. best place to get connectors is: nw cable and connector. 44 pin ide idt connectors are 2.25 each, you will need 3 plus some 44 cable from them to make an adapter to to run a 2.5 in drive. however, if you are going to run a 3.5 drive, get a 2.5 -> 3.5 adapter ( www.compgeeks.com or whatever) and 3 40 pin idt connectors. you have to flip the pins (pin 1 -> pin 2, pin 2 -> pin 1, etc.)

you will also need enough power from somplace to run the drive. a 30 gb western is a lot more drive than you can power from the internal power.

There are reports that Pentium 200 MMX chips are also drop-in replacements.
They're also more available than WinChip-2s. I'm expecting a P200MMX in
sometime in the next few days; I'll keep you posted.

To set things straight....A pentium200 is a drop-in replacement for a unit that came with a RISE cpu. It will not work in a unit that came with a winchip without board mods/soldering. The easiest way to get 44 pin cables is to order them from Badflash.com. He'll make them any length...cheap and fast.
