This board has posted several places to get "Free Sample" parts and I though it would be nice if we had one thread dedicated to such links and the associated hacks. I'll start with the basic cable and connectors and go from there. Please feel free to add to the list and correct any errors. Also, always remember to maximize the variety of part numbers you get on a single request (even if you're not going to use them) because these companies track whom they have sent a sample to and they don't give seconds! So get what you can and if you are not going to use something then either give them to me or post them so someone else can benefit. After all there are always those that need a second shot in the school of hard knocks (yeah me too).

To start, go to fciconnect.com and click on the "Sample Request" button in the left column.
NOTE: This option doesn't shows up until you get down to the individual part number page.

Part Number:
89947-144 (use qty 2) -- These are the 44 pin IDE connectors.
NOTE:
89361-144 This is another 44 pin IDE connector that has been touted as one that works. So until someone gives a definitive answer U pays U money and takes U choice.

91820-044 (use qty 12 inch) -- This is the (ribbon) cable Remember to twist each pair of wires between the connectors.

62453-022 (use qty 2) -- This is the socket for the Compact Flash Hack.

69255-005 (use qty 2) -- This is the ethernet jack (I think, correct me if I'm wrong) for the Internal USB Ethernet hack.

PLCC32PTSMTTRSOD -- This is the "small outline" BIOS socket (I think, correct me if I'm wrong) for those that broke their original. Another option is P/N:
PLCC32PTSMTSOD

Other SMT BIOS Socket Options -- These are the other 32 pin SMT options available. Until a definitive answer is posted U pays U money and takes your choice.

I shall put together a post on the dip switches, trim pots and DC to DC converter for the core voltage (over clocking) hack next followed by the Maxim chips and equivalent for the RS232 board next.

That ethernet jack page (http://catalog.fciconnect.com/fci/red/datasheet/datasheet.asp?ProductNumber=69255-005 ) calls it a "CAT 3" connector. Shouldn't an RJ-45 for ethernet be a CAT 5 connector as that's what the cables are? I'm not certain of the naming schemes for the various parts, perhaps that's correct. Can someone with a little more knowledge of this chime in?

New MessageDip Switches and Trim Pots (modified 0 times) KneuB_2
Profile | Email
TD04H0SK1 -- This is the half pitch 4 position dip switch for the V1 & V2, V3, V4 & V5 Core Voltage hack (I think, I haven’t done any of these hacks….yet). Using the DipSwitch Design Guide will take you to TDA04H0SK1 (R). Note that the “R” means “Reel”, no “R” at the end means “Tube”. Use the R and you might get a strip of these things to share.

Trim Pots -- There is a whole slew of trim pots to fit your fancy, my choice would be the TR03J504T for no other reason than you really have to be nuts to solder this one by hand Of course there are much more practicle sizes to work with such as the TR52P504. U pays U money and takes U choice, the key is 500K ohms (Note: I have not done this hack yet so feel free to correct me if I’m wrong)

You can build up a shopping list by clicking the sample link at the end of each “Build A Switch” you run and then send your collective wish list with the “Display Shopping Cart” button at the bottom of the page But the Request Link allows you to put in specific part numbers (think “R” suffix) and is more likely to work. i.e. the shopping cart didn’t work for me.

I’m all for an i/o free ice cream night (I’ll be at the Covington store. But if you want to get a head start Ben & Jerry’s is doing the same thing all day on May 2nd.

I've dealt with the people at FCI Connect beffore and have always been pleased. They also stock plenty of USB sockets, but I've never been able to tell which style is correct for the I-Opener. Can any of you guys determine the proper part number to ask for?

New MessageATAPI Connector for CD-ROM (modified 0 times) KneuB_2
Profile | Email
JAE Connector Spec Sheets -- Here you will find all sorts of connector spec sheets including the KX14 & KX15 series (otherwise known as the "Standard ATAPI" connector used on a whole lot of CD-ROM drives. There was a lot of talk early on about producing an adaptor to use the standard ATAPI CD-Roms on a 44 pin ribbon, but that ball got dropped. If someone is interested in picking up that ball (and I hope someone is) samples of the KX15-50K2D plug (or other) can be had by clicking the sales link and filling in the request form. I got the straight variety and really could use a couple of the 90 deg variety KX15-50KL() so if you fill like requesting an extra I would appreciate it.

Free C++ text book (teachers edition) and others to chose from. Now if I could just figure out what to do after deciding which book I want as a sample.

Sample Request Page -- Here is the . Here is some of what they offer. Notice that there are AC to DC, DC to AC and DC to DC converters here also…just nothing that I saw would work for the present DC to DC Step-down hack(two good sample links are listed above). But these pdf Cross Reference documents look interesting.

Ceramic Capacitors -- I wonder if something here might be useful for the [url=]Dual RS232 Daughter Board ( probably not but I didn't look close enough to know for sure) or one of the other hacks that required a capacitor, post a link if you know of one.

The header for the ATAPI to IDE adapter can be found at FCIConnect.com. The part number is 57102-F06-22. Even though it is already listed above, the ATAPI connector ( P/N KX15-50K()()) sample can be found at Kensington Electronics Just remember to click on the sales link.

New MessageLCD Connector (modified 0 times) KneuB_2

From Jak1 and Wild_pencil

The motherboard's LCD connector appears to be FI-S 30P-HF (the spec is the JAE F1 Series) and the mate (that belongs to the cable) would be FI-S 30S.

JAE's USA outlet is Kensington Electronics. On their support page is an option for samples.

The IOpener to LCD panel Connector is a JAE FI-S30S. You will also need the crimp-pins (30 of them), to complete the connector; these are JAE FI-C3-A1.

I got my samples from Kensington Electronics. The minimum order is $50, if you decide to go beyond the samples... so you might want to look around their site for other useful stuff like the USB connector or the CompactFlash connector.

If/when I get the LCD stuff working, I might bulk-order these if nobody else wants to be a supplier.
