Works well (modified 0 times) Mitchell I followed the instructions and pictures from the above links and used .47 caps and it works great. No buzz into stereo with iopen turned off. Sound quality is excellent. I had a friend at an electronics shop do the soldiering for me, as my hands are a bit too shakey. I would recommend this procedure if you are gonna use the iopen for an mp3 station. Now I need to find a really cheap external cdrom and power supply. They shouldn't charge you anything. It's got the 47uF capacitors in it (two of them). I got mine about 6 months ago, so I don't know if they offer it still or not. -- acad 04-18-2000 16:04:41

Caps in series work like resistors in parallel. series: c = 1/(1/c1 + 1/c2 + 1/c3 + ... + 1/cN) parallel: c = c1 + c2 + c3 + ... + cN The data sheet recommends .33, though. 04-19-2000 02:15:35

Pioneer77: RE:Audio Line Out Instructions (modified 0 times) Old Component Geek Nope... pf reads "picofarad" (trillionths of a farad), and uf reads "microfarad" (millionths pf a farad), farad being the unit of measure for capacitors. The caps are being used to block DC, which the .47pf would do, but from the comments on this thread, there appears to be some ripple in the DC power supply, so the caps are also being used as high-pass filter, passing the AC above a certain frequency on, but leaving the DC and low frequency noise behind. Because of the way caps work, the .47pf is waaay too high a value and would more than likely prevent the audio signal from passing. Good luck with your mods. The problem I'm having is figuring out what connections to make on the actual headphone jack? There's about 5 connection points if I remember offhand. I heard that the tip was ground, and then tried to make an educated guess on left and right, but it's not working right. I get some awful feedback where you can hardly hear the sound. 04-24-2000 14:09:01

RE:Audio Line Out Instructions (modified 0 times) Dr. Dremel Hmm, well, probably some posts here that need to be deleted which I won't comment on :) But I did find that the .47uF caps I used filtered out the lows noticably (in my car's system with a 10" in a band-pass box). I found some 2.2uF SMTs I'm going to try next, I'm hoping they'll be a high-pass filter I won't be able to hear. The 1.0uF caps recommended by the chip's pdf should also be sufficiently large to be unnoticable. Otherwise the sound was excellent, I'm rarely able to notice the mp3 encoding artifacts :) 04-26-2000 22:23:52

Now the volume does wierd things to the audio out. When I turn the volume way up, the left channel get's loud, as do the stock speakers on the I-Opener. When I turn the volume way down, the right channel get's loud, and the stock speakers get soft. Anyone have any ideas as to why this happens? 04-30-2000 21:07:07

RE:Audio Line Out Instructions (modified 0 times) prolifix I did the line out mod and soldered a 1/8" jack to the board amplifier. it works okay except there's barley any bass, I tried hooking it up to multiple stereo systems with the same problem. is this just due to the crappy soundcard? I upgraded to the yamaha drviers and it helped a bit but didn't really solve it. soooooo.....any ideas? 05-02-2000 15:31:09

RE:Audio Line Out Instructions (modified 0 times) RedLine Maybe you're using the wrong value of capacitors? I'm using the .22uf Mylar (green) ones from Radio Shack, they sound fine. I got 2 more of them to run 'em in parallel so I could net .44uf, but it didn't seem to make a difference. Installation last night of line-out *********************************** I got 2 small wires, tinned the ends of them with solder, then sorta bent them down and put just the tips on the ends of the resistors (like in the pics online). I then barely touched the wire with the soldering iron, and that little bit of heat was enough to melt it onto the surface mount stuff. You DON'T have to solder that ground wire to the IC, it's just a ground that you can get anywhere on the IOPener (big line running all around the board is grounded)..that should save some work. *********************************** It sounds great, thanks guys!! 05-05-2000 12:35:09

The LM4835 spec recommends a coupling capacitor from 0.33µF to 1.0µF, and I tried a 0.47µF first and found the low end of the bass missing. (I have a 10" sub in a bandpass box in my car.) Then I tried 2.2µF caps and the bass was back. So while the 1.0µF recommendation may be just fine, especially since it can depend somewhat on what you're plugging it into, if you want the bass you might want to use slightly larger ones just to be sure. 05-07-2000 21:17:24

RE:Audio Line Out Instructions (modified 0 times) RenegadeX According to p.15 of the spec. document, those are audio INPUTS to the daughter card...however, later on, there is a specification for audio and audio/modem combo daughter cards. I guess they meant "input" *to* the daughter card. Wonder if we can find any of those audio/combo cards in parts supplier shops? RE:Audio Line Out Instructions (modified 0 times) Mac- Profile I was having a problem with this: a)the headphone jack will of course need left and right inputs these are pins 17 and 26 respectivly on the amp these connections must be made through a 220uF electrolitic cap and must each also be pulled DOWN with 1k resistors b) the control pin of the headphone jack must be connected to pin 21 of the amp through a 100k resistor, this connection must also be pulled UP with a second 100k resistor. open-i said that. I read the other .txt file and it said to get a belkin 3 audio cable. If i got a belkin 3 audio cable, i know to connect the 2 wires to the pins implied above, and the ground to the side, but what is this control pin stuff? what is the control pin? 05-25-2000 17:00:59
