Using 12v Lasagna Fan from tennmax
Using 12v Lasagna Fan from tennmax

New MessageUsing 12v Lasagna Fan from tennmax (modified 0 times) SouthPaw
Call Tennmax and order the tennmax lasagna cooling fan for industrial computers 12v with the 4 wire connector. (looks like a hdd power connector)(This version has longer leads than the 3 wire). Then connect to fan to ground and the 12volt on board. http://sites.netscape.net/djbarry/images/12V_On_Board.jpg http://sites.netscape.net/djbarry/images/Power_Connections.jpg

You guys seem to keep forgetting that the 12v is both on all the time and is probably not rated to handle the extra current continuously. I took a piece of copper foil about 1/4" wide and about 3/4" long, bent it into an "L" and soldered some little squares of pc board to it so that I could put a 78L12 (12v, 100ma) regulator, a PNP transistor and a resistor on it so that I could drop the unregulated ~18v input to 12V, and gate it on with the 5V power supply rail. When you shut down the box, the fan goes off. Simple HARDWARE hack, and the piece fits under any mounting screw that has a ground pad under it. This way I run NO risk of overloading anything.

You should post pics, fred.

Make that an NPN. It was late. And as for pics, it is almost too ugly to show, but it works. I will post pics and a schematic when I get everything up and running.

Ok, here's my hack for the fan: I used the 12v Lasagna fan. I also mounted my HDD with 2 small angle brackets (1 on each side of the drive) and mounted the ugly "pc" board to the mount screw nearest the modulator. Check out the crudeness at:

Fred I like yer design but I cant seem to be able to locate the parts. I am gonna power a powerleap CPU with it. I need a solid 12v power supply for it, and was gonna use your design. please help! :)

uhm.. cant find the parts? the 78xx regulators are ultra common.. try radio shack? like 7812 or 7805?

hey fred.. think of adding a power on switch? say, a transistor that opens it gate on the 5v from the HD or serial port so it flows the current.. use a transistor as a switch.

I see that I was posting in the wrong place... OK, I will sell a nice little board, with 78L12 regulator and switch transistor, with (2) 6" leads along with the instructions and priority mail for $15. A local store here in Dallas has a large stock of 78L12's. I really love the way that mine works. I am running Win95 and when I do a shutdown, the power cycles and the fan goes off, too. I have just about got it goof-proofed enough to send it to my 76 year old mother so she can do email, surf and have SpeakFreely (a webphone). Anyone interested in the board can email me at:
/fredstevens@yahoo.com I prefer PayPal (paypal.com), postal money orders, but NO checks.

The 78L12 is in a TO-220 case: itty-bitty compared to the big 78xx series. It is rated at 100ma. If you need more current, let me know and I will redo to board to fit the bigger reg. Also, the email is fredstevens@yahoo.com
