Overclocking the iOpener
Overclocking the iOpener

New MessageOverclocking the iOpener (modified 0 times) Roastbeef
Well folks, it's not working yet but I believe it's possible to overclock the iOpener through software.

Progress and info at http://www.geocities.com/rarose2/index.html

On your webpage you state that the chip is a "Winbond W83194R-37".
There is a utility called SoftFSB (www.h-oda.com) that lets you change the FSB in Windows. It reports that the chipset is compatible with the program.

Has anyone tried this yet?

just tried it, didnt fly blanked the screen, and I needed to pull power before it would reboot.

I finally got around to trying it. It works fine for me at 70....which works out to 210 MHz. Trying the next step..75...resulted in a lock-up. No harm done, just rebooted. There is little if any more heat with this setting. Winchip2, tennmax fan, cpucool working, results in a stable temp of 37/38C....after playing MP3s for several hours. In all a no sweat gain of 5/6%. What is puzzling is heat does not seem to be the cause of the '75' setting not working....must be something else.

I've posted some thorough information on overclocking the I-Opener with SoftFSB. I think I got there before you, RoastBeef :)

Follow this link to my thread!

This subject has been kicked around a bit, but yes, SoftFSB does in fact work and it works very well. I'm currently running a WinChip2 at 225mhz thanks to a post I found by searching "SoftFSB" on this board. The credit should go to "OpenGL Guy". Follow his instructions and you're going to be very pleased.

Are you using SoftFSB? (H.Oda) My setup seems just like yours....WinChip2, Tennmax, etc.....But mine will crash on the "75" setting. I wonder if the brand of hard drive or maybe a different BIOS setting is the problem. 225 MHz would be a big step up.

Your memory has a lot to do with it as well. What is the speed rating on your memory?

My memory is OEM. I'm still trying to find a good deal on a 128 meg chip. I am certain that heat is not the problem. The crash is immediate upon the change to 225 MHz. I have tried this first thing after starting, with a CPU temp of less than 28C, still crashes. I am using a 2 yr old IBM 2 1/2" drive, don't have the part# written down, but I'm sure no one could tell if a certain hard drive would work at 225. It'll be trial and error.

OK, a little clarification. I am running with a 128 mb SODIMM memory chip from Crucial ($116), but don't know if thats what makes the difference. I will say that you can set SoftFSB to 75 (37.5) and that seems to work fine as far as clocking at 225mhz. If you set at 75 with the lower setting, (less than 37.5) ..... that locked me up too. Again read the post by OpenGL Guy .... perfect instructions from my perspective.

One more thought.....am running the latest SoftFSB beta release, Softfsb 17g1, which is available on his website.

I just down-loaded the latest Beta version...same result....locks up at the "75" setting. Back to the drawing board. Here's the address http://www.h-oda.com

I'm still trying for 225 MHz. I installed a new IBM pc100, 128 meg sodimm. Too bad...still locks up at the "75" setting. There has to be a reason some people can get this to work. I've already tried two different hard drives. Any more ideas? Are there bios setting changes that might help?

Sorry I keep answering myself, but I'm 99% certain I figured this thing out. Here it is: in the old days of cpu technology, after a chip was made, it was tested and then rated for its performance. The same chip could be called a P60-P75-P90 depending on how it tested. With this WinChip 2 probably the same thing applies. Some of these chips probably can be made to run at 225 MHz, others, apparently like mine, are maxed out at 210. No amount of tweaking is going to help mine.....so, I'm settling for the 210MHz, and with 128 meg ram, it is acceptable. Anybody with any other suggestions...feel free to continue this.

The Voltage Is Usually A Big Reason Why Over Bussing Ur Chip Doesn't Work.... Because The Voltage Can't Be Boosted U'll Be Stuck Until U Do Some Major Soldering....

Thats all She Wrote... (U probably HAve A lower Than Norm Voltage Or It Drops... Had Same Problem On A Dual celeron Board.. the Voltage Regulator Sucked)
