Speakers in I-O OUT OF PHASE!!!
Miswiring of Internal Speakers Discovered!

New MessageSpeakers in I-O OUT OF PHASE!!! (modified 0 times) Jambotron
I found out Saturday night that the very odd sensation of off-kilter sound during the tutorial on my IO was actually due to the internal speakers in the IO being wired out - of - phase! (The perception of sound from an out - of - phase set of stereo speakers is really bizarre; kind of makes you want to turn your head to get better sound.)

This is easily remedied by swapping the + and - of ONE of the two speakers and comparing the sound again. I reversed the pins on 1 of the speaker connectors, and immediately had vastly improved sound quality!! It is pretty easy to release the pins out the back of the speaker connector with a pin or razor blade to facilitate the swap - be gentle & patient! They slide out of the little white shell when the retaining tab is released (with your pin or razor blade) on the connector, and slide back in easily. Soldering on the speaker itself is possible, but unnecessary and more hazardous.

Has anyone else felt like their sound needed a little help?

Anyone else tried this?

Anyone else found the same problem?

This seriously happened to me too! Strange... I thought I had dammaged my right ear from listening to really loud music!

Maybe not ;)

Using an old trick from my car stereo installers at the shop I work at, I determined that my left speaker was out of phase. The date on mine 1.29.2000. BTW here is the trick

Disconnect your speaker from the IO, take two small wire and connect them to the speaker. Take those wire and hold one to a AA battery, touch the other wire to the other end for just a second, repeat, watch the cone of the speaker. It should be going out and back to rest, or in and back to rest. Note the polarity of the battery vs the polarity of the speaker wires.

If speaker goes out and then back to rest and your + terminal of the battery is going to the + terminal on the speaker then it is in phase. If it goes in and then back to rest and the + terminal of the battery is on the + terminal of the speaker then it is out of phase.

Like I said I determined my Left speaker was out of phase

Ok here's some tips...
if your audio is out of phase... Ie one speaker is out of phase, then just reverse ANY one speaker. this will get both speakers in phase. it dont matter past that. wither the cone goes in or out during the first part of the waveform will not change the sound. if the left speaker is generating a revese waveform from the right (out of phase) this will cancel your bass response, and make the audio generally suck.

as for the extended testing to see what speaker is out of phase....dont waste your time... just flip one of them and call it done. some people wil argue wiht me on this but then these people will tell you they can hear the diffeence between 10 gague lamp cord and $5.00 a foot speaker cables (they cant). This is an I-opener, you wont get studio quality sound out of it.

Can one visually check to see if the speakers are out of phase? Should both black or red wires be towards the ide header side of the board or should the red of one speaker and the black of the other be towards the ide header side?
