There are now three viable audio out options I believe:
1.) Simply splice into the wires that run to the poor stock speakers.
http://www.open-i.f2s.com/projects/adam_lotz_line_out.html
This is the easiest method, as there is no need for mobo soldering, but leads to feedback/noise when powering down the IO.

2.) Pull the signal just before it enters the LM4835 amplifier, using .47 uF caps as a high-pass filter to remove DC bias/low-freq noise.
http://www.wcug.wwu.edu/~holland/iLineOut.txt
http://www.retina.net/~jna/iopener
Drawback to this method is the volume slider in the front of the IO won't be functional.

3.) The New Roastbeef method.
http://www.geocities.com/rarose2/frontaudio.html
This method pulls the signal after the amplifier, so the volume slider should work, but requires quite a bit of soldering.

My question is what are the pros and cons of each method, and which will give the best audio quality?

Yo, Roastbeef-

1st of all I have to admit that I am a nubie so i'm pulling up the fire proof undies as I type...

1. On your mod page, you mention putting optional caps on the front control PCB, What values?

2. Does this mod reroute the "virgin" audio paths to the sprakers or do the speakers need to be wired to the pads on the Front control PCB?

- Thanks to you and everyone else (especially the bios folks) that have made this a hack that even the new guys can learn from!

1) Don't know about the caps... I didn't feel the need to play with them.

2) My mod is mainly geared towards those people that want to put an audio out jack in the system... if you just plan to continue using the internal speakers I'd recommend you not make my changes.

Roastbeef: about your hack at the bottom of the page. if you are doing what I think you are, what is the max angle you can send and still have the IR reciever still get the signal? I was considering building the IR reciever into the IO from that acer KB from compusa, so if I could get a wide enough angle where it still works, it would be much nicer to build it in there rather than a new hole like I am expecting to have to do.

So the output your mod ends with is a "line" level or unamplified for use with an external amp/speaker setup?
