TSR adds ESCape key to original keyboard

New MessageTSR adds ESCape key to original keyboard (modified 0 times) ITPro
This TSR changes the backquote/grave accent character (the ` under the tilde) to the ESC key. The ESC key will now be recognized by most DOS apps and will also work in a DOS window under Win95. Not tested under Win98 but should work. This will NOT provide ESC key support in the BIOS setup screens; I'm still working on that issue.

While true that one can simply use another keyboard, some (myself included) would like to use a completely "stock" system.

On a completely "stock" system you don't need the escape key. :)

Good work.
A little off topic but relating to the ESC key, I spent an hour this morning with the original keyboard open on the theory that perhaps the membrane matrix had a cross-over for the ESC key even thought the key was missing. I shorted all possible combinations on the membrane plugs and found no ESC key. Well at least we now know that it wasn't going to be that easy! So if anyone else was thinking of using their time this way, forget it.

Thanks for the kudos guys -- I'm glad to have contributed something to the Holy Hack.

BFMersion: I, as well as a few other people, jumpered every combination on the matrix and didn't find an ESC keycode either. It still could be possible with a hardware mod to the keyboard encoder chip, but even if it were, most people could not do the mod as it almost surely requires cutting traces, lifting pins or adding resistors.

On a related note, I'm getting close to globally remapping the backquote key to ESC so that it will work in the BIOS setup screens and won't require any TSR program. The required patch to the BIOS was trivial to determine, however I still need figure out what checksums in the BIOS need to be tweeked to accomodate the patch. There is damn little on the net concerning this info!

BTW, that 2k TSR program was written in Microsoft Basic using the PDQ library from Crescent Software.

BFMersion/ITPro: Same results here.

One thing to consider if you're pondering Linux, the backquote is pretty useful for writing scripts. It might be preferable to map out another key (one of the function keys?) instead.

ITPro: My hunch is that if the hack is BIOS-based, it'd be trivial to write a small program and distribute executables for DOS and Linux which will write out the patched ROM file for the "key of your choice".

BTW, mad props to ITPro for doing this. I've got no fear of jumpering/cutting traces, but attempting to "solder" to that membrane keyboard using weird conductive plastic goops frightened me. (Did anyone with a conductive pen ever try writing on the plastic? Maybe it's simpler than I thought :)

Someone has posted a kernel map and a xmodmap file for Linux to create a usuable keyboard mapping for linux. Check the other technical area. I believe you can find these files at:
