LCD Backlighting in Windows 98 Standby Mode

New MessageLCD Backlighting in Windows 98 Standby Mode (modified 0 times) Fred M.
If you are running Windows 98, you may have noticed that when the system goes into Standby mode the screen goes into text mode with a flashing cursor and the backlighting remains on. Credit for solving this go to Gibaholic and Cornholio:

RE:Getting Win98 to Suspend (modified 0 times) gibaholic

I used dpms monitor mode in the bios.......shuts the screen down

make sure suspend mode is enabled in the bios.

Umm, is the DPMS change all that is needed? It doesn't work for me, the screen still goes into text mode with the cursor upper left.

And what does 'make sure suspend mode is enabled in the bios' mean? Is there a setting I haven't seen? In Power Management there is an option to enable suspend, but it is not an enable/disable setting, it's a delay setting, with several options ranging from seconds to minutes. Nothing happens when I change that either.

Just curious. As soon as I can get my hands on the upcoming VIA chipset patch to fix the Linux 2.3.99pre3 'VFS error-can't mount root' problem, win98 is coming off this thing.

There is a delay between when it goes into text mode and when the screen backlight goes off. The settings I have are:

Power Management: User define
PM control by APM: Yes
Video Off Method: DPMS Support
Video Off After: Suspend

Works like a champ.

It was noted in a prior thread that you should be using the latest "4in1" driver from VIA for this to to work. It is availabe in the VIA website. If you have trouble finding it, leave an address and I will mail to you this evening.

okay, I am doing something wrong, or missing something.

With Win98 (not SE) and BIOS settings:

Power Management: User define
PM control by APM: Yes
Video Off Method: DPMS Support
Video Off After: Suspend

AND the VIA 4in1 driver package installed, I still don't see any change in behavior. I have screen saver set to none, and the 'turn off monitor' energy saving option set to 'After 1 min'. The screen dutifully goes blank after 1 min, but it's just in text mode with the backling still on and the cursor flashing at upper left.

you say there is a delay between text mode and screen going off? how long? No change after an hour here. I'll keep fiddling, but either I'm being incredibly dense or it's not as simple in all cases. Ideas?

No solutions in this post, just more information.

When Win98SE had just been installed before I changed any settings in the BIOS the LCD would power down. Later, after installing the CyberBlade drivers I could never get it to power down and I tried all the combinations of the control panel's "Monitor is Energy Star Compliant"/"Autodetect Plug and Play Monitors"/"Reset monitor on suspend/resume" settings and the BIOS's "Video Off Method"/"Video Off After" settings. I also tried the 4in1 install but that didn't help. With the CyberBlade drivers the best mine can do is the black screen with blinking cursor.

Does that help anybody figure out the solution? I'm looking forward to it...

I have it working...

I am running Win98SE with no VIA drivers loaded (they're not needed for SE unless you have an AGP video card)

In the BIOS I set APM to "Max Saving" (which set the timers to 10 seconds, but as long as the "PM to use APM" setting is enabled, the Win98 timer will override)[I think the key is that this enables the Doze/Suspend options]

Also, in the BIOS, I am using DPMS monitor mode.

In Win98 I set the Power Scheme to "Portable/Laptop", System Standby = 30 minutes, and Turn Off Monitor/Hard Disks = Never/Never (Control Panel, Power Management).

Now, after 30 minutes of activity I get a 15 second warning from Win98 that the system is going into standby. Then the screen blanks to a text mode, then a few seconds later the screen blanks completely.

BTW - I do have the cyberblade drivers installed as well as the YMF715 drivers for audio.

On a related note

I noticed that the behavior of the power button on an unmodified IOpener works as follows. A single push will turn the display off and may put the machine in a sleep or suspend mode. If the button is pushed again, the display is turned back on and you are right back where you were when you turned the display off. If you press and hold the power button for 4 seconds, it does a power off.

I like the idea of hitting the power to turn the display off and on without shutting down. Does anybody know how to change what the Windows98 response is to a short press of the power button?

This is standard Power control on an ATX motherboard.

You can change how the power button works by setting the appropiate option in the BIOS.

My power button works the same way under Win98SE... I can wait 30 minutes and let Win98SE go into suspend, or tap the power button and the system will suspend. Another tap on the power button and it wakes up.

By default the bios has suspend, doze, and HD shutoff disabled. Make sure they are enabled and at the time limits you desire. If you want to use the "one touch" suspend on the power button there is a selection in the bios for "instant off" or "4 sec delay" choose "4 sec delay". I had to reinstall the 4in1 driver after changing this, because win98 did not recognize the suspend at first.

I think that is it.....I am going from memory, since I am not looking at my IO

Someone please post a link to the Via 4in1 drivers. Thanks.

Actually, when you press the power button on an unmodified I-opener, the following things happen:
* The display turns off
* The power LED turns off
* (maybe) the I-opener returns to its main screen

And when you press it again,
* The display turns on
* The power LED turns on
* (maybe) the I-opener returns to its main screen

I don't know at which point the I-opener returns to its main screen, but it does do so at one of the above two.

I do not believe the I-opener actually goes into suspend mode. Try the following:
1. Position the mouse cursor in a corner of the screen.
2. Hit the power button so it "turns off"
3. Use whatever pointing device you're using to move the cursor away from the aforementioned corner.
4. Hit the power button.
5. Notice that the cursor has responded to your input, moving out of the corner, thus revealing that the machine was NOT suspended.

There's also the entire thing about dialing in to check email automatically, whatnot.

So I would very much like to know how to programatically switch power to the display and the power button LED.

Ideas?

(I'm not creating a new thread here, being a reference area and all, but will do so in the Technical forum. Happy hacking!)

Duh... I should think before I post...

The display SHOULD be able to be powered on/off by a BIOS call:

INT 15h
ax = 5307h
bx = 01FFh
cx = 0003h (off) / cx = 0000h (on)

Of course, this doesn't mean that the power LED will go on/off as well. Someone care to check this out?

When I first installed it, Win98SE was not turning off the backlight when it went to sleep. I've since fixed that. I posted all the details to a thread in the original technical area.

The main point is that you must have DPMS enabled in the bios, and in the Display Properties, Advanced, Monitor page, tell Win98SE that you have a Plug and Play Monitor. In Screen Saver, Settings, set System Standby, Turn off Monitor, and Turn off HD to your choice of time.
