Can you use this on a Network?

New MessageCan you use this on a Network? (modified 0 times) jlfaulring
I just got my "Great News" letter and was wondewring if I would be able to use an ethernet card for this. It is mentioned on the website that there are USB ports, so could you add a USB ethernet card? I have cable service and would like to see about accessing their service through my home network. Has anyone tried this?

I'm interested too - I have a networked DSL connection and would like to avoid tieing up my phone line 10 hours a month keeping virgin happy. I have a USB ethernet adaptor for my laptop.

I asked Merinta, maker of the Webplayer about using the USB for ethernet networking. Here's their response...

Dear PeeWee,
Being a customer of Virgin, you need to call them for support. But the
answer to this question is NO. You cannot use a USB Ethernet card with
webplayer at this time, because Virgin hasn't implemented the drivers for
any USB Ethernet card.

I would suggest that you contact Virgin with his request. And if Virgin gets
a lot of these may be they can implement this feature in the future.
Regards,
Merinta

We should let Virgin know we want ethernet support on our WebPlayers. If you people think it's a good idea, I'll host an online petition that we can send to Virgin.

I don't think that they would immediately dismiss it. I would imagine several of their customers have have high speed access avalable to them (either at home, at school, or at work) and would use their WebPlayer for 10+ hours a month. Any thoughts?

I would love it if the damn thing had a USB add on (especially if they just gave it to us). Since I can't get an iopener, I've been using this. Its not THAT great, since its not a small linux terminal, but its pretty damn cool in its own right. I want USB ethernet and I'd be willing to sign a petition to try and get it...

ME TOO!!! The way I see it, this is a win-win situation for Virgin: their ads continue to be displayed, yet they don't have to pay for our dial-up connection.

Can someone post an e-mail address for Vigin where we can send this request to?

Also, once enough of us get this unit, perhaps we can figure out a way to implement this feature ourselves (without voiding the TOS).

First let me say that I know virtually zero about linux, except whatever I've picked up here.

That said, wouldn't it be easy enough to load linux drivers for a USB ethernet adapter to the DOC? This seems to easy - am I missing something?

I will be implementing the survey page over the next couple of days. I'll post here when it is ready. Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I sent the president of Virginconnect an Email saying I want to use my DSL via a USB Netcard. When you log in, you get a Welcome Email, and I just replied to it, like that.

It's questionable whether that's really the president's e-mail or if it's just an automated greeting that is sent to new users.

You can sign the petition which I noted in another post:

thanks
