Randy's Easy Instructions for Using Your ISP With the Virgin Webplayer

1) Turn on your Webplayer. When you see the usual login screen, press CTRL-MUSIC. (The "MUSIC" key is the one just to the right of the ESC key, top row (second from left).

2) You'll be presented with the rotating password page. You have to get past this. It may take you 5 to 10 minutes of trying, but you'll get past it. You will be presented with a 3 or 4 digit key, and you'll need to input a 4 digit password in the provided field. Here's a few quick tips. First, if the key is just 3 digits, pretend that that key has a "10" in front (i.e., example, a key of "334" should be considered as "10334"). Second, if the key is less than "2500", pretend that the key has a "1" in front (i.e., example, a key of "2345" should be considered as "12345"). If the key is more than "2500", consider it as is. Next you'll create four password possibilities by subtracting these four numbers from the key: 2400, 2401, 2402, and 2403. If none of these work after the fourth try, you'll return to the regular login screen, in which case you should press CTRL-MUSIC and try again with a new generated key.

3) Surprise! Just when you thought it was going to take you back to the login screen, you'll find that you have busted into the setup panels. You'll change the settings in four of the panels. Note the navigation arrows on the top-right of the screen because a couple of the panel tabs extend past the edge of the screen. The four panels you'll change are: "PPP File Settings", "Dialup Settings", "Network Settings", and "User Settings". In the next four steps, I'll detail exactly what to change in each panel. Be careful NOT to change anything else. Also, DO NOT click the button at the bottom left titled "Revert to Factory Settings." You've been warned.

4) On the "PPP File Settings" panel, you should change only two fields -- "login" and "pap_user_name". Change both to your ISP login username. A couple of notes about this: The original Virginconnect "login" field will have something like "user VC/YOURVIRGINNAME@virginconnect.com" in it. Don't leave the word "user" in there. Replace the contents of the whole field with your ISP login username. Similarly, the "pap_user_name" panel will look exactly like the first field except that the word "name" will appear instead of "user". As before, don't leave the word "name" in there, but instead replace the contents of the entire field with your ISP login name. Easy enough. CLICK "APPLY" on the right and wait for it to save. Then click "APPLY" one more time to be safe. (I didn't click this twice the first time around and it didn't save my new settings. Your mileage may vary, but why not be better safe than sorry. Clicking it again just takes a second.)

5) Next, you'll alter the "Dialup Settings" panel. There are three fields to modify here -- "modem.local.dial.number", "modem.local.phone.number", and "secretsfile.secret". Put your local ISP dialup phone number in the first two fields, and put your ISP login password in the "secretsfile.secret" field. Click the "APPLY" button, and then one more time, to ensure that the settings were saved.

6) The third panel to modify is the "Network Settings" panel. You'll change three fields in this panel -- "domainname", "primaryDNS", and "secondaryDNS". These are what your ISP calls the DNS Lookup fields; if you know what they are, put them in there. If you don't know what to put there, call your ISP tech support and tell them you are configuring a manual TCP/IP connection and that you simply need the DNS Lookup domain name and associated numeric address strings. I use Mindspring, for example, and I simply put "mindspring.com" in the "domainname" field, and then "207.69.188.185" and "207.69.188.186" in the "primaryDNS" and "secondaryDNS" fields. Note: I'm including this as an example for newbies. These obviously won't work unless you also use Mindspring as your ISP. Every ISP has different DNS settings. Finally, click "APPLY" again and then again to save this panel's new settings.

7) The fourth and last panel to change is the "User Settings" section. You'll change six fields here. Put your ISP login username in these four fields: "displayname", "emailid", "local userid", and "userid". Put your ISP login password in these two fields: "local password" and "password". DON'T change the "global password" and "global userid" fields, even though they include original Virginconnect data. One more, click "APPLY" and then again to save this panel's new settings.

8) Click "Exit" below, and you'll return to the login screen. Turn unit off. Unplug the unit. Plug it back in. Turn it on. You should now see your local ISP login username on the login screen. Sign on just like you did when you were using the VirginConnect service.

9) Caveat: I've not yet figured out how to change the home page, so for now you'll continue to view the Virgin home page when you sign on.

10) Congratulate yourself. You no longer depend upon Virginconnect to stay in business in order to continue enjoying your Webplayer.

I hope this helps someone. Please excuse the newbie tone of voice, but I wanted to help the greatest number of individuals here. I fully recognize that most of this will be nothing new to the experienced old hands here.

That's it!

Dag, you're welcome. :)

Today is the last day we can use our Webplayers using the included free ISP. Virgin says that after midnight tonight, it's over. I'm wondering if they'll wait until tomorrow sometime (or later) to actually turn it off, or if someone will literally be there at the stroke of midnight Eastern Time to throw the switch. This isn't quite as exciting as the Florida recount, but time will tell regardless.

Randy,
Thank you, thank you, thank you. This is what we've all been waiting for.
Now can someone figure out a way to use one of the free ISPs through the software without having to add a HD, and give us such a clear step-by-step way to do it?

So when Virgin sent us that e-mail saying the Weplayer cannot be configured to be used with another ISP they were lying through their teeth. Well, thanks for the free Webplayer, Virgin! And thanks for the great information Randy.

Hiya. A non-techie here with a soon-to-be-defunct Webplayer...

Thanks for the instructions, Randy. But I'm not clear on how to set up another ISP - there are many free ones for downloading, but the webplayer won't take a download, will it? I don't currently subscribe to any service (save the crappy Virgin one - my main computer time is at work). Is there any way to revive my Webplayer with these restrictions?

Thanks a bunch.

Susan

anyone - please feel free to email me personally to talk me through this: sholbrook@ima-art.org thanks!

Susan, I don't think you will be able to use a free isp without adding a hard drive if the free isp requires that their software be installed to use their free service. On most isp's that are paid for you can just enter the settings on any computer and connect to the net, so those types of isp should work just by changing the settings in the setup menu. This is not the case with many (or all?) free isp.

No luck yet getting it to work with netcom a brother to mindspring ISP. Can not seem to get rid of "name" and "user" from PPP File Settings. I remove it but when I power back up it is there again.

domainname = ix.netcom.com
primaryDNS = 207.69.188.185 (same as mindspring)
secondary DNS = 207.69.188.186 (" " ")

For login/pap_user_name you just entered your "user_name" and not "user_name@mingsring.com". Right?

I just confirmed that the unit does indeed reinsert the "user" and "name" words there for you, however I don't yet know why or what impact this has. Doesn't seem to mess up Mindspring. To answer your second question, yes, I just put in my login username by itself without the "@mindspring.com" (in my case) following it.

BULLETIN. You can increase the speed of your connection by making yet one more change. This one is in the "Dialup Settings" panel (Step 5 of my instructions). Change the field labeled "modem.baudrate" from "28800" to "56000". Then click "Apply" a couple of times, then click "Exit". Worked for me!

Uh-oh, Mac10... If you use AOL or Compuserve2000, you're not going to be able to do this. They use a proprietary dial-up scheme that won't allow your using any software other than what they supply. Until someone reveals a free ISP that is compatible with the Webplayer, you're out of luck for now. (I'll bet someone will figure out how to use a free ISP with this pretty soon, though.)

please try (pass+1), (pass-1),(pass+2),(pass-2),(pass-4),(pass+4),(pass-8) and (pass+8) when pass appears
to be incorrect... And post the correct password when one of these work !

I only need a couple of incorrectly generated pairs with their correct pass...
Preferably also within 4000-8000 range !

Xentric, it's not possible to try more than 4 password attempts with a single key. After the fourth unsuccessful attempt, you are thrown back to the signon screen, and you're then forced to press CTRL-MUSIC again to get a new key.

ok, well I think we may never get a "perfect" keygenerator then as it takes
more work to figure out the correct pass than just trying with another key
since 59% of all generated keys will be correct.

The guy that found the method knows that there has to be one more bitshift
but until we've got some new pairs that work and where the generator creates
a wrong pass we can't figure out how that last bitshift works...
For him it's just for fun to COMPLETELY crack the method, I think that i'll
have to disappoint him with the fact that the keygen's succes-rate causes
no new pairs to be submitted.

But it works with almost 2 out of 3 reliability so that would be enough...

It was a pleasure to crack this thing for you !

Randy,
Great instructions. However, as an AT&T WorldNet user, I'm having problems and wonder if any WN users have been successful. The problem is that when WN has an encoded username and password (16 digits) in addition to your usual ID and PW. In the steps that require username and password, I tried various combinations. However, when using the encrypted PW, the opening dialer screen does not seem to accept it because it does not accept 16 digits. Has anyone been successful with WorldNet?

Has anyone been able to access Earthlink using the Webplayer? If so I'd like to hear about it. I tried but no success. I was able to get to the settings pages thanks to the great instructions. I could not connect because it said my password was invalid even though I know it's not. Am I right that except for one line you have to put in "username" is stead of "username@earthlink.net"? Thanks!

Speaking of National ISP's has anyone gotten MSN to work with built in software? I haven't been able to determine the DNS numbers for MSN but the unit doesn't even get past the password stage.

Just curious if it is possible. If not with the built in software, if I put the Image FameWolf created, could I MSN with that?

I apologise for all the stupid questions, I have been following these threads since we learned we get to keep the units and I have yet to see any reference to MSN.

Thanks for any info you can provide.

Hi, I don't have anything on MSN, although you should be able to use that. Call MSN and ask for the DNS numbers; that's not a proprietary secret and is available to you as a subscriber.

As for Earthlink, yes, you should be able to do that easily. Just put "ELN/" in front of your username and leave off the "@earthlink.net" in the appropriate spots. In other words:

login: ELN/yourname
password: yourpassword

Some folks have asked how to use Earthlink with the Virgin Webplayer. In case this was missed in another more specific thread, here's what you need to do...

Just follow this advice whether you are using the Webplayer's original QNX platform, or whether you have installed Embedded Win98 to DOC, or whether you are using a full hard drive. In order to use Earthlink, no matter how you've hacked your Webplayer, do the following:

Insert the characters ELN/ (i.e., the three letters and a forward-slash) before your login username.

So, for example, if you're Earthlink login is "virginhacker" and your email address is "virginhacker@earthlink.net", you would use the following as your login username:

ELN/virginhacker

Note that you do not include the "@earthlink.net" after this login username.

Finally use the following information for your DNS settings -- again, no matter if you're following my instructions for QNX, or using Famewolf's Embedded Win98, or doing the hard drive hack. The DNS settings are:

207.217.77.82
207.217.120.83
earthlink.net

You should have no problems using Earthlink if you follow this!

for those of you trying to use MSN I'm pretty sure that you have a similar situation to the one the Earthlink people have. your username should read "MSN/username" with no @email.msn.com or whatever.

New MessageRE:How to Use Your Own ISP with the Virgin Webplayer (modified 0 times) Randy

Gorf, that's not correct. MSN calls their login usernames "Subscriber IDs". The MSN Subscriber ID does NOT include MSN/ as a prefix. In fact, if you do include that, you won't be able to login even using Win98. I just confirmed this with MSN Customer Service at 1-877-635-7019. It appears that only Earthlink uses such prefixes among the major national ISPs. For additional information regarding configuring MSN accounts, refer to:

http://memberservices.msn.com

For any MSN customer who has difficulty using the Virgin Webplayer's stock QNX OS, I would recommend installing the Embedded Win98 to DOC, or using a hard drive. That advice also applies to AOL and Compuserve2000 members as well.

I received an email from someone who couldn't access the "usual login screen". For some reason his keyboard was literally sending out some stray signal that the Webplayer interpreted as "go ahead and sign on immediately" (probably a "return" key but it didn't send automatic returns in text fields, so go figure). Anyway, the solution was to cover the keyboard's infrared window while booting up until the usual login screen appeared. Then all was well, and he could press CTRL-Music as usual to access the password area.

Well Randy I think you are partially right, but MSN customer service is probably not being completely honest with you. I'm not a MSN subscriber but a member of my family is. And while helping them with some connection issues I've viewed the properties of their DialUpNetworking connections. At which time I noticed that the form used was "MSN/theirusername". And since MSN OEM's their service through the same company as my ISP (they both use worldcom's UUNet) and since I know my relative's logon password I have the ability to test it out. So I started my DUN connection and changed the username to "MSN/theirusername" and used their password and voila now I'm posting using their account.
However I followed your link to the memberservices page and when I tried to click on the "Accounts and Billing" link I received an error message stating that I was not logged in using my correct subscriber ID.
So you're right about what MSN "tells" you is your userID but I'm guessing that the subscriber ID stuff is actually verified through the MSN software AOL-style and if you just want HTTP access and don't need to administer your account at MSN (probably won't work with the MSN Passport, email, etc. either) then logging on to your local UUNet number in the fashion I described should do the trick. :)

Hmm, gorf, well your advice is well taken then. It doesn't hurt to try it both ways, depending upon where and how you're logging in -- whatever works on whatever platform. There's no telling what they require for logging onto their email or newsgroups servers, etc.

Randy, sorry to try and bother you directly about getting the Virgin Webplayer working again but my computer literacy only goes so far. Your directions worked fine to get into the setups but I am at a loss when it comes to finding a simple ISP for using the thing. My wife liked the Webplayer for it’s simplicity and she refuses to turn on my PC for fear of screwing something up.

I use MSN for my ISP but I couldn’t get the DNS numbers from them and I guess from the number of postings concerning MSN there may be bigger issues. I download NetZero this morning and installed it on my PC but from their help screens and such it appears they don’t use the DNS numbers either. I could dialup both MSN and NetZero but without the DNS (and maybe something else) I can’t get past the dialup/password. Can you suggest a free ISP that I could use with your original set of instructions?

From one of your other postings I think you suggested another avenue was using something called Embedded Win98 to DOC, or using a hard drive but that probably defeats my biggest reason to get the Webplayer up and running again (cost). I tried to follow the trail of postings to see what this option actually entailed but the directions were not clear. My PC is three years old, Windows 95 and lacking a USB and I don’t have a laptop hard drive sitting around either. If this option is simple or low cost can you point me in the right direction. If I just need a special cable or something simple for a temporally hookup to load the software to the Webplayer I could probably find someone with a USB equipped laptop. I don’t suppose I could string my PC and the Webplayer together with a phone cord either?

Thanks in advance.

Wow, I'm really surprised that MSN won't provide the DNS numbers. Those numbers are actually available to any MSN user by looking at the settings on their PC; if some experienced individual would provide the instructions for gleaning the DNS settings for any particular ISP, that would be appreciated. I don't remember what the sequence is for that.

I'd recommend Earthlink or the local ISP of your choice. ISPs that require the use of proprietary software (like NetZero, AOL, or CompuServe2000) won't work.

I too have MSN. I looked all over the place for the DNS numbers to no avail. They are not in the network settings and MSN doesn't use the standard dial up networking. The dialer it does use doesn't have any place for DNS numbers. I did install famewolfs win98 image on my DOC however and did get the standard dial up networking running with MSN. Famewolf has a DNS setup in his image under the TCP/IP settings and as long as I set my user name to MSN/***** where ***** is my login name for MSN all works well. The only thing I can't get working is my pop email through MSN without OE. However of course my hotmail account works fine. All in all I am very pleased with this solution. As a matter of fact, I am typing this message from my upgraded webplayer. Thanks to everyone for all your info.!!
