BULLETIN. You can increase the speed of your connection by making yet one more change. This one is in the "Dialup Settings" panel (Step 5 of my instructions). Change the field labeled "modem.baudrate" from "28800" to "56000". Then click "Apply" a couple of times, then click "Exit". Worked for me! (Thanks to Maldoror for asking, "Hey, isn't there a faster modem in there?")

My webplayer routinely says that it's connected at 49.0, although my modem settings are at 28.8 as you described. Am I actually connecting at 49, or would I see performance improvement by following your directions?

I actually measured throughput by using the Text Performance Test at Toast.net, and I showed a real improvement. You're welcome regarding the how-to instructions -- glad you're up and running. Here's the link to the speed test:
