I'm a webplayer virgin...

I have never used a webplayer before, and I just obtained a
webplayer for hacking purposes. I don't have any docs or
instructions that may have originally came with the device.
I tried Randy's instructions but I don't think I get the
"usual login screen", just the "VirginConnect Preparing for
the Internet" screen. The only thing I've been able to do
is ctrl-alt-del to restart the beast.

I've been to the VirginConnect website, but there's nothing
there. Can anyone point me to any docs that describe the
basic operation of the webplayer? Is it possible that the
OS on the DOC has been corrupted during shipping? If this
is so, is there anyway to recover?

I haven't tried connecting an external IDE drive, and that's
the next thing I'm going to try. If anyone has any suggestions,
plz lemme no.

Thanks.

Ahhh, read the board before posing stuff like this,
on this board there is EVERYTHING you need to know.
Just take 5 Min. to look next time.

Not so fast, "M_firmature"... Please hold off before making judgments like this.

KyserSose, if you don't get the usual login screen, but instead are ONLY getting the "preparing for the internet" screen, then your DOC may in fact be corrupted. When you first plug in the unit, it should run through the "preparing for the internet" screen in less than 30 seconds or so. Have you given it a chance to sit with that screen for a minute? What happens if you leave it turned on without intervention for several minutes? Does it hang at that "preparing for the internet" screen?

Randy,

It does indeed hang on that "preparing for the internet"
screen. I've now left the unit on for over an hour,
and it's still preparing for the internet.

FWIW, I did scour this board, and found nothing
pertaining to this issue.

Any idea on how to proceed? Haven't yet tried an external
IDE drive, but that's next.

Argh. Looks like your disk-on-chip (DOC) is indeed hosed. Hopefully someone here will have a better suggestion for you. (If you end up wanting to sell the unit, send me email at rand@newsguy.com). Good luck! If I hear something about how to restore this, I'll certainly post here and hope others will do the same.

Have you tried the bios yet? You bought this unit to hack it
then why are you worried about the doc unit? I know that it
can be a neat hack getting it to run a os, but you wouldn't
need it to boot the unit. so

1. get a hd cable
2. turn on the ide port
3. be sure the hd has a bootable os on it
4. done
