Embedded Win98 DOC image available for download!!!

New MessageEmbedded Win98 DOC image available for download!!! (modified 0 times) famewolf

The following doc image contains a copy of win98 micro ( a stripped down version of win98 )..it also contains the following additional software:
1) Opera Web Browser
2) Naviscope web proxy (ad filter, clock sync, dns cache)
3) Zonealarm (firewall)
4) Coolplayer (mp3 player)

Instructions to install this image:
1) Download the doc image file from http://www.famewolf.com/files/embed98.img
2) Place onto a hd with a copy of the doc utilities from http://www.m-sys.com/download.asp?driver=DOC-DOSver4.2.zip
3) Boot webplayer off HD to dos and run GETMIMG OLDDOC.IMG (this will backup your old doc image)
4) Type PUTMIMG EMBED98.IMG

Bootup...you MAY have to do a Mformat D: prior to the PUTMIMG to clear out the QNX boot...this version also supports the SMC USB fast ethernet adaptor. It already has the drives installed for the modem, ide, sound and video. Virtual ram is disabled.

Enjoy!

You may want to wait until someone has verified the doc image works but you can feel free. I would appreciate a mention when you do so however.

If you have a 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch adaptor you can use it in REVERSE with a 40 pin cable and an external power source for the drive (or a gender bender for the power connector) to hook up a normal 3.5 inch drive to the webplayer long enough to do the install...this is how I setup mine without having any of the special 44 pin cables...

The CMU version seems to be bad. I have downloaded both versions and they have different sizes. The CMU version has a hex '0D' inserted in front of every '0A'. It appears it was uploaded as a text file and the upload program thought the 0A was a Line Feed (LF) character without a Carriage Return (CR) so it inserted one. The CMU site is also about 20 times slower.

The 'good' one is 39,064,816 bytes.

The 'bad' one is 39,216,112 bytes.

Yes, that one matches the good one I listed. Speed of download is about half of what I get from the original link (47KB/sec vs 120KB/sec).

DO NOT use the CMU image!!!

Dumb question alert....

I've got a freshly formatted HD with embed98.img and DOC-DOSver4.2.zip on it. I hook the drive up to the virgin. I crack the bios password and boot to the HD. a) the drive won't boot unless you've sys'd it and b) Where is GETMIMG and PUTMIMG coming from? Are they contained within the DOC-DOSver4.2.zip archive?

Looks like there should be at least 2 extra steps in the instructions?

Answered me own question after unzipping the DOC-DOS - sorry.

So it looks like there's about 2MB left on the DOC after this - just enough for netzero. Cool!

I have been haveing problems with my doc and hd interaction.
When I have a bootable doc it always goes to the hard drive
even if the hard drive is not bootable, the only way i can get
the doc to work is if i disable the hd in the bios. I have
tried dformat d /first and that did not seem to help
any ideas? and on my webpayers the modem off the doc image
doesn't work it says it isn't getting a response from the modem
when i goto check the modem after that message it says that
the port is open...

Delete the modem..install the modem as generic 33.6. Read the doc FAQ on the site posted where the doc utils were downloaded from and follow their instructions to make the DOC the PRIMARY boot device.

Hey, famewolf, you wrote:

"on the page you SAID you visited"

Looks like you doubt this fellow's truthfulness. Let's be respectful and give people the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he read the page and simply missed that part. Or perhaps he just didn't understand what it was he was reading. I seriously doubt he was lying, so let's cut the guy some slack. If you talk to people with phrases like "on the page you SAID you visited", then you're basically devaluing them and talking down to them. Try being nice.

How do you achieve this via a desktop (40 pin) drive? I'm still searching, hoping. Looks like most folk used a laptop drive to do the hack. I'm not that fortunate to have a laptop drive around.

Any help would be appreciated.

use a 44pin to 40 pin adaptor in reverse to hook a normal HD up to the WP to install the image or buy a 44pin to 40 pin cable.

After installing the image and getting 98lite up and running I noticed in Device Manager that there is still one question mark. It is listed for "Other devices" "PCI Bridge" with a "Resources" of "Memory Range 40012000-400120FF". Is there one more driver that needs to be added to fit this? Sound is ok and lists two items "Nationl XpressAUDIO 16-bit Sound" and "National XpressAUDIO PCI Bridge".

I have also found that I can not add an external USB Hub. Each time I do it loads a driver from my Win98SE CD that kills the built in USB Root Hub and I must reinstall the image again to fix it.

Ok, the new drivers fixed the unknown PCI bridge error. Not sure why Famewolf did not install that driver before making the image. Also had to remove and reinstall the modem as a 36K standard one to get it to work. But now I have a fully operational system.

One think I have noticed is that the USB port does not find my USB track ball unless I unplug and then replug it after powering up windows.

I spoke to soon. I did get rid of the PCI bridge problem but I also lost sound. All the drivers were there but nothing comes out of the speakers. Reinstalled the previous backup of the image and the sound came back. So I guess I can live with the question mark in front of PCI bridge.

Removing and reinstalling the modem as a generic 36K one was still necessary to get the modem to dial out.

Got it working running off the DOC.
I don't want to nitpick, but you can save yourself about 3 more megs on the DOC by killing the windows\media folder (who wants the microsoft sound anyways?) and by deleting the font variations (i.e. times new roman bold, italic, bold italic, verdana bold, etc...) Windows can make the standard fonts look bold etc...

Incidentally, I'm going to be writing a guide to hacking the webplayer - if anyone typed something up and wants to put it in let me know. loraksus@hotmail.com
Thanks

(i have combed the posts for hours and nobody else has mentioned a problem like this. Thanks for any help!

Did you try looking for hidden files? The doc image is a COMPRESSED drive image using Drivespace III..you won't see the directories till you boot off it.

Thank you for all of the help getting my webplayer up and running with the embed98 image. I used my desktop PC running Windows 95 to transfer the image...now I can't figure out how to get a free ISP's software loaded on the compressed DOC. For some reason, when I boot to the DOC, it won't recognize the hard drive.

I realize that this may be a simple question, but I would really appreciate the help. The drive is bootable with Windows 95. Is this why the Win 98 Webplayer can't recognize it?

I assume this is the drive you used to install Famewolf's image. If so, just go to the directory with the DOC software and type:
DUPDATE D: /FIRST /S:DOC42.EXB
This assumes that the DOC is coming up as drive d: and that you are using version 4.2 of the DOC software.
This will give the DOC priority over a hard disk on the IDE line.

Thank you! Thank you. It's awesome! I just got my cable ($7.99), the 2.5" to 3.5" converter ($7.99, too much) and a drve with Windows ME and it is great. My stupid questions are: where is the modem driver for use with Windows Me (not on the zipped drivers at larwe.com)? Can I just turn off the webplayer or simply unplug it like I was doing with the old OS, or do I need to shutdown properly with the DOC with the new image on it.

It's just too cool with my choice of DOC or hard drive.

can we do a dual boot?

which drive takes precedence?

my best idea i think is to run the OS off the 48megs and have my semi-corrupt 1.6 gig drive for mp3's. It was in my iopener until I got an old 4 gig from a really nice friend of mine

let's just hope the coop works out

Hi,

In the effort to make my computer to boot from an embedded 98 DOC, I entered the following at the dos prompt: DUPDATE D: /FIRST /S:DOC42.EXB (as suggested by Cespool). When it rebooted, I got "Operation System Not Found."

How do I get back to boothing from my HD?

Thanks,

I did something like this, but I wasn't able to recover on my own and ended up sending the DOC in to hevnsnt to reprogram. I entered the DUPDATE command with the /FIRST parameter as well, but the thing I forgot to do was copy the system files (SYS <drive>: at a DOS prompt) to the DOC before rebooting. Without these files, the DOC is not bootable to DOS/Win, leaving the WB to display "Operating System not found". I tried hiding the DOC in the BIOS settings and force the HDD to boot first, but had no success. It was just easier to pay a few bucks to have someone reprogram it. I have the DOC and HDD up and running now, booting off the HDD. When I want to boot off the DOC, I just disable the Primary Controller in BIOS at power up and viola, 98Lite.
