CMOS Password?

New MessageCMOS Password? (modified 0 times) Kamel
Someone had mentioned in an earlier thread that it is possible to get into the CMOS setup, but there is a password. Does the Webplayer have a standard CMOS battery on the motherboard like the IO? If so, clearing the PW would be a cinch! Yank out the battery!

After you turn the machine on, press the "book" key (F2) to get into the BIOS. Anyone try removing the battery yet to clear the BIOS password?

Tried the F2 key and was able to get to the password prompt. Only problem is it still asks for a password even with the battery removed. I'll try leaving it unplugged for a few hours to see if that makes a difference.

I posted this in another thread already before I saw this thread:

I haven't seen the webplayer, nor have I ordered (or plan to order) one, but this MAY be of help regarding the password:

http://www.computercraft.com/docs/psswrd.html

I was particularly interested in the part that suggests removing a piece of hardware (all the memory if possible) and the resulting error message allowing you to go straight into CMOS and turning off the password. Again, I don't have one so I dunno if this is any help or not, just thought I'd share. Also, I take no responsibility since I have never tried this myself (on ANY type of computer). You may also want to do a search on the internet for "hack bios password" there's quite a bit out there (including software that claims to hack AMI and AWARD bios passwords [and possibly others, again I haven't tried any of these so use at your own risk].

Does anyone know what real time clock chip is in there? The password should be stored in there. My eyes are too bad to read the numbers on most of the chips. It should be a 24 pin chip. May be the one under the modem.
