SMC USB Ethernet Flakiness

First off, just a quick thanks to everyone who has posted hacking information here...it has been extremely useful in making my webplayer a functioning, behaving pc. So, um, thanks!

I took the laptop HD route, but nonetheless my installation is working pretty well. Sound and video work, and there are no more unknown devices lurking in device manager. My sole problem right now seems to be a very flaky USB ethernet adapter. I can get it working, and it will work fine, but when I reboot, it will stop doing anything(no link lights, no connection, etc.). The Webplayer recognizes the adapter's there, it just refuses to turn it on. I have to uninstall/reinstall the adapter as well as USB drivers for it to work again(for a while, anyway).

It's the $37.50 2202USB/ETH from outpost.com, similar to what everyone else seems to be using. I used the drivers from the floppy, threw them on the HD before it got ported over. I'm not entirely sure why it is being so uncooperative. It works just fine on my main box, so I'm inclined to think it's the USB driver...

Has anyone else had similar problems? I'll keep poking at it, but if someone has any tips, I'd be happy to hear them. :)

Yeah, on all three of the webplayers I have. One more so than the rest. I have a Linksys 10/100 usb and it acts
very similar to yours. No ideas on fixing it though

Add the D-link 650 to the list of flaky usb ethernet support from this device. The d-link never failed on my I-openr. With the webplayer it will be working fine and usually in the middle of a large stream of data transfer it will die. Most of the time just pulling it out of the usb port and re-inserting it gets it going again - sometimes a reboot is required. If I plug my d-link 650 into a powered usb hub it doesn't see it at all.

I just finally got my new SMC Ez Connect 2202 USB adapter today, tried installing it and everytime it wouldn't accept the driver. When I selected it from the list while using "Have disk" It installed then came me a error code. Then get this: All my USB devices shut off!(hub>mouse, scanner, and printer) None came back on until I rebooted and pulled the USB NIC. eek.

Well it works on my WebSurfer!

i use the SMC 2202USB/ETH as well with my webplayer and it works great, as long as i connect it to the USB port AFTER i boot into windows (running 98SE on a laptop drive). if i boot windows with the adapter already plugged in, it works fine (can get on the network, etc) but my keyboard starts acting funny. it is like the CTRL key is always down. if i hit 'C', it copies, 'F' brings up the Find box, etc. (makes it very hard to enter URLs). anyway, as far as networking it works great and it isnt a big deal to unplug it before i boot, but i thought i would add my 2 cents worth.

Mattcrandle - I finally got my SMC 2202 working by plugging it in after boot as well. It still loses Netbui local networking randomly. I also had the same flakey keyboard errors just like you mentioned...press the f key and "find" box comes up, etc. Pretty weird.

Well I too have fixed my SMC 2202 adapter. I ripped out the drive and loaded both the updated SMC drivers form the site and the drivers that were on the 3.5" disk. Believe it or not, the drivers on the disk worked better than the Updated drivers. It connects better if you ask me.
