Successful Mini PCI install?

Has anyone installed a Mini PCI card in the WP? I'm just curious if it is supported by Win98 (or anyother OS) and the hardware.

I'm wondering if any hardware or software mods will be needed to use the Mini PCI.

I am currently in the process of getting some mini-PCI modems that were pulled from IBM ThinkPads. I'm estimating receiving them in the next couple of weeks.

I will post my findings as to their workability when I try them out.

Now, if I could just get my hands on some of the modem/NIC cards that are out there.....

I was able to get one Mini-PCI modem from a current model ThinkPad. It appears to be manufactured by Ambit (couldn't find web site).

I was able to find something on it here:

Drivers are easily found on IBM's web site. I will try to have pictures and links as soon as I've had a chance to test this.

Please note that I only have one of these cards so I'm not prepared to offer them for wide distribution. I'm only doing this as an excercise to find a potentially better modem for the Web Player. The difficulty is going to be connecting the modem since its connector is very different from what's in the Web Player.

What exactly is wrong with the standard modem? It's a conextant hardware based 56k modem..not a softmodem.

I wouldn't say there was anything wrong with it. I suppose my reference to "better" could mean something that I find more comfortable to work with and may not translate into what may work for someone else. My mistake for being too subjective.

However, I'm sure I'm not the only one curious as to the usability of the mini-PCI slot in these. If I can get this working, it is conceivable that other cards would work fine. I just wish they weren't $200/each. I just happened to be lucky to have a friend who bought a ThinkPad and gave me the modem out of it when he replaced it with one of the $200 NIC/modems.
