Mobile GPS Hack/USB Support

Hey all, I'm about to get a webplayer through the co-op. It seems you guys pretty much have it hacked so it can be a fully functional windows box. I know that the USB interface seems to have some compatibility issues. Has anybody made any sort of determination as to what type of devices USB will work for and what sort of devices it will not? I'm asking this because my ultimate goal with the webplayer is to make an in-car GPS with moving map. Has anybody tried anything like this already and have any experience to share? The main issues will be whether or not the unit will be compatible with the GPS reciever (Delorme EarthMate with serial to USB adapter) and getting the unit to be powered through the car cigarette lighter. I'll try to keep you guys notified with how this goes and if anyone else has any related information please don't hesitate to post!

The USB adapter isn't needed if you're handy with a soldering iron.

There are TWO serial ports on the mobo, one used by the modem and another spare. These need either a MAX232 line driver, or in your case, a 74LS04 may do the trick.

Well, this may sound sad, but I am a clutz with circuitry. That is why I was curious about the USB to Serial. I wish I were more handy, but I learned my lesson back in the Pentium days..... OUCH.

Anyone have GPS working on the Webplayer with USB?

I just got my Webplayer running RandMcnally's street finder GPS (The NEMA 2.0 receiver) I used the Belkin USB to serial converter.

I had to load Windows ME instead of Windows 98, I couldn't get 98se to get the USB ports to work, it took ME to fix it (This might be the first time Microsoft actually fixed something!)

Made a converter from USB to PS/2 for the power, the GPS receiver has a seperate ps/2 power connecter; I connected the two power lines off the USB which are +5 and ground to the pins 4 (positive) and 3 (negitive) of a ps/2 connecter.

I ran the power off my cig. lighter to a power inverter and used the 100ac pwr supply that came with the webplayer.

All pretty cool, I used the usb converter instead of the MAx253 converter on the serial ports so that I could switch it between my webplayer and my i-openers. I now just need to figure out a way to better mount the Webplayer to protect it from vibration; sitting in the passenger seat won't work for long! It would be slick to get it to display on the windshield like a Oldsmobile Cutless Supreme's HUD display but that would take more time and money than I have.

That is awesome.

I have seen some mobile desk mounts that would work pretty good.

My idea: To make the GPS software run as the shell, thus even if it lost power, it would re-initialize to the GPS mode.

Can you let me know some more specifics on the PS/2-USB power converter plz?

Pin 1 on the USB is ground, and pin 4 is +5

I just cut a USB extension cable I had laying around and connected ps/2 pin 3 (ground) and ping 4 (positive) to the respectable ones on the USB, pins 1 and 4.

ps/2
1 2
grd 3 . 4 +5volt
5 | 6

USB

|----|
|1234|
|====|

pin 1 - ground
pin 2 - +5

Not real technical, I also understand that the NEMA 2 receiver will run on upto 18 volts too, The converter that RandMcnally sells is just a 12 volt adapter that plugs into the cig lighter and converts to a ps/2 connecter. It might be better to find another power source since there is big load on the USB all ready and the Webplayer power supply isn't know for it's over supply of power.

Did you use the DOC or did you add a HDD? I don't know how large that software is, but I am assuming you added a HDD...

You would have to add a HD. The GPS Software like Streets is 120 MB + 700 or so for the full maps, which you would want.

FYI.... Streets and Trips 2002 is on its way out. What timing.

Yes I added a 6.4 hard drive and copied all the local mapd data to the hard drive, the complete program runs without cd's. It takes about 2gb to copy everything.

I think I found what I am going to do with my new webplayer. I have a Magellan 4000XL with the data cable. I can make the connector, and will get a USB to Serial (any better ideas?) What map software would you recommend for this (is it universal?) I live in Idaho, so does anyone know which program has the best maps for the Pacific North West area?

I can't recomend Rand-McNally; I live in Columbia MO and they have the regional airport downtown which is understandable except I work for the city and happen to know that downtown is the "mail" address for our airport not the actual airport which is 9 miles south of town.

(no wonder Ozark airlines at our airport is going out of business, no one can find the airport!!!)

Microsoft Street & Trips is cheap, and appears to work well. Is compatible with all NMEA compatible GPS's.

It will be upgrading shortly, so keep your eye out.
