Hey, welcome. There have been two sets of instructions for two primary hack versions. The first hack allows you to browse the web with your own ISP without any hardware modification or addition. The link to that is here:

http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=vwgeneral&Post=109&Idle=0&Sort=0&Order=Descend&Page=0&Session=

The second hack allows you to use a special version of Windows 98 (thanks to "famewolf" here) which is then loaded on the internal Disk-on-Chip. Here's the link to that:

http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=vwgeneral&Post=142&Idle=0&Sort=0&Order=Descend&Page=0&Session=

Others have actually inserted a small drive inside the unit, but this is a less popular way to go with the Virgin Webplayer. It's much more fun to do it without having to buy a peripheral. Nevertheless, hunt through the postings here, and you'll see people discussing how to do that.

Randy

The IDE wires can be had many places,I got mine at http://www.badflash.com and they were less than 20 dollars. You may want to look into a 2.5 to 3.5 drive converter Ebay or online store (badflash makes a 2.5 ide (webplayer) to 3.5 ide (normal hd) so if a laptop drive is to much you could use this). The hard drive can be found on ebay by searching for "Laptop hard drive" or http://www.compgeeks.com/products.asp?cat=HDD should work. After you get all of the required parts, do this

Pre. Sys and load os install files on hd, in the case of windows, Sys the drive and then copy win98 or options folder
from the cd

1. Open unit and locate the 2.5" ide connector
2. Plug in hard drive
3. Plug unit in and press F2 or "Open book" to get to bios, If it doesn't work the first time do it again...
4. Enter "schwasck" for the bios password
5. Go down to boot options and press enter, goto silent boot and press enter and select disabled (this will get rid
of the virgin screen) press escape to return to main screen
6. Press right arrow and goto "Advanced" then press down to select "I/O device" and then select "Ide bus" and press
enter, select primary, then press enter
7. Press escape to back out of "I/O" press escape again to goto exit screen, Select "Save changes and exit"
8. Whala, If above steps were followed then it will work, BE SURE YOUR DRIVE IS BOOTABLE.

- M_firmature:

I know im going to get flames here but: What do you ask for at badflash for you cable?
(I.E. specifiy what you want start with the cable running left to right with the red pin 1 stripe at the bottom. State where you want the double connector (left end, right end or someplace in the middle) and if the open (female) end should point up or down. Do this with the other connectors as well)

Also twisted or non-twisted?

I dont have a clue on the cable issue, and I know nobody that can help, except for this BBS. I went to 4 different computer stores in my area, and no one sold a 44 pin cable. Is it propritory in laptops?

Thanks for your time.

Well I am sorry for the misunderstanding. Let me ask you this, have you ever seen the section labeled "Hacking" at your local computer store? If not, they will more than likely not carry any of the things that you need to complete this hack so don't even look there. So, you will need to obtain a 44 pin cable non-reversed, a strait through cable. This can be obtained at http://www.badflash.com or http://www.compgeeks.com. Unless you want to put in 2 hard drives or something like that then get a 10" cable that will allow you to put in a hard drive almost anywhere in the case. Any more questions?

Wow, such sarcasm. There was a time here just a few short months ago that we didn't need to beat up newbies in order to prove how eleet (sic) we were. If a guy's never heard of an IDE cable, why not teach him straight out instead of acting like you're doing him an incredible favor by stooping down to his unanointed status?

I thought he knew what a IDE cable was, I could post something for those who don't... Sorry I didn't mean to come across like that, but if you were to do a search on this board for ide, it would probably turn up what you were looking for.

There I go again, pissing everyone off!

I know what IDE cables are and such. I just wanted to know off hand from a experienced person just what to ask for because I have never opened up a laptop, and sure as hell didn't want to order the incorrect cable to find out you needed a regular cable, not a twisted one. Even thought the I-Openers(So I've read) need the twisted ones. And if you ask me, The I-Opener and Webplayer are really similar in many respects. Case in point.
