Thermal Problems with 2.5 HD Installed?

I've got my Webplayer running Win98 SE. It works well (other than I don't have the power down button or sound working -- which seems to be a common problem). However, I've noticed that the unit is lockup after a few hours (usually in the screen saver). I'm guessing this is probably a thermal problem and that I should install a fan. However, before I undertake this new hacking adventure, I thought I would check to see if others are having this problem.

I think this would be a problem... Mine didn't lock up but it was running pretty hot.

I'm thinking on the lines of a Peltier heat-pump (lots of them at meci.com, cheap),
sitting on the processor instead of the heat-sink.

Ahh, Goto http://www.tennmax.com and ask for the i-opener cooler with the special instruction "mention that you
need T10 tape instead of Socket 7 clip" then cut off the end and sodler it to the dc power plug. Mine runs
really cool now. It may work on pin 9 and 10 of the serial port, I didn't try that.

This sounds interesting. Forgive my ignorance, but I'm assuming the T10 tape is thermal tape that is being used to mount the I-opener fan to the processor/heatsink instead of using the S7 clip. Correct?

Any problem with clearance between the fan and the Webplayer case?

Any pictures of the installation?

No, it is smaller in height than the webplayer heatsink, I can take pictures if you would like. All and all it was really easy to do, stick the fan, clip wires, solder. I am about to get another player and I will do the same thing to it, I will take pictures of the process this time. The only other thing I was gonna do it mount a 1" toshiba laptop fan right above the hd. This will be a little trickier, you can't solder it to the supply because when the top comes off it will rip the wires off the fan. So I figured I will have to make a little breadboard to fit around the dc plug and copper contacts on both sides will power the cpu fan and the case fan. Then just put pins sticking up like a mobo and when the top comes off the connector can be pulled off without hurting the wires.

Just a quick stupid question... Does this fan fit on top of the existing heatsink? I tried (not very hard, since I don't want to break anything) to remove the heatsink from my processor, but didn't have any luck. I removed the pins holding it to the mobo, but it appears to be stuck on. I don't think it's thermal tape, simply because in my past experiences, thermal tape will come off without breaking anything. This didn't feel like it would. Is there anything I need to do to get the heatsink off?

It does come off. The thermal goop (that white stuff, I guess it is teflon sumtin-or-other) loosens up as the processor warms up. Let the machine run a while, then you'll be able to slide it off. Probably best done after shutting the WP down. I had the same initial experience that you did, the sucker seemed like it had netpliance epoxy holding it on, it was so tight. After I removed the little plastic screws holding the heatsink in, I later noticed the heatsink had shifted and deduced the possibilities. Gotta love those happy accidents!
