Is there any indication that we could hack a parallel connector ni there, maybe
using a IO board on the mini-pci slot, or thru the unknown 10pin conenctor
on the mobo?

usb to parallel adaptors are around $20 on the auction sites such as egghead.com.

Hey famewolf - I have seen many for a printer - are the ones you have seen also usable for something like a parallel zip drive ?

The IO-chip does support a parallel port but it isn't used on the board and isn't supported by the bios.

>>maybe using a IO board on the mini-pci slot

That's a possibility, but there's nothing available like that as far as I know.
This would need developing.

Unkown?? What unknown?? I revealed the function of that connector weeks ago.
Check my site for more info on the subject.

Whether or not you could use a usb to parallel adaptor with something other then a printer would largely depend on the adaptor you picked...some of the cheaper ones are unidirectional or one way transmission only...some of the more expensive ones are bidirectional meaning they get data back from the printer or device they are hooked up to...to use something like a zip drive you would need bi-directional communication at a minimum...you can always buy one from somewhere like office depot etc and return it if it doesn't do what you want..however you'd have better luck running a cable out of the player from the ide port to hook up whatever ide devices you wanted and using an ide zip drive..which is usually cheaper anyway... My biggest problem has been that the usb support is flaky at best in the webplayer and even when my usb network adaptor is working it's only a matter of time before the lights on it turn off and I loose the network connection...this is a major pain when your whole goal is to stream mp3's to the stereo in the livingroom from the lan in another room. ;)

the usb port seems much more stable now that i switched to a 3com usb network adapter - it doesn't die anymore like you described. also, my usb zip drive is rock solid.
