This is for the folks who want an easy way to get to the DOC so you can send the DOC to someone like hevnsnt to program. I don't think this is self-evident (at least it wasn't for me, duh) but there is a little door/cover on the bottom of the webplayer that you can unscrew to get to the DOC. It looks like you need a tiny hex screwdriver, but I used a tiny flat screwdriver to unscrew that screw to open up that little cover. For me, this was after having taken apart my webplayer several times. Open up that little cover, take out the DOC, and send it off to hevnsnt or someone else to program. You may want to make sure you remember how the DOC was originally put in such as which way the sticker/label is on the DOC for when you put the DOC back into the webplayer.

(Now, that I know how to take the whole thing apart, if I can find a 44 to 50 cable for a Quantum Go harddrive, then I could hook up that harddrive to put under the motherboard and all would be perfect in the world....)

I'm interested in reprogramming my WebPlayer DOC with the 98Micro DOC Image. In fact, I was preparing the DOC a while back before I attempted to download the huge image file (at 28.8K) when I ran into a little problem. I installed an HDD with the DOC Tools and DFORMAT'd the DOC to come up as the first drive. Only problem is, I forgot to add the DOS system files after the DFORMAT, now I can't boot from the DOC. I've tried to play around with the BIOS settings to have it boot from a hard drive so I can reprogram the DOC, but no luck. Since I DFORMAT'd the DOC to be the first drive, the WebPlayer is determined to boot from it.

For now, I have removed the DOC and am able to just use the HDD with the WebPlayer. I still want to load the DOC with the 98Micro image. I'm willing to send it to I-Hacked or anyone to do this (if someone has an alternative setup to do so), but would like another shot at doing it myself.

Any suggestions?

Just wanted to thank hevnsnt for his DOC programming service. I've been running my webplayer off an old HD, but now that he has revived and reprogrammed my DOC, I'm liking it a lot. It's working great.

I too have to tip my hat to hevnsnt. He programmed my chip and shipped it out the same day. Less than a week total turnaround!

I would highly recommend his service!

schwasck,

what's the best way to extract the DOC safely, after you've opened the trap door?

i used one of those flexible metal fingernail files to pop it out. you could probably use a small flathead screwdriver. you may want to slowly pry it out from end to end. just be careful if you pop it out too fast cause you may have to catch it if it flys out. it shouldn't, but that was what i was afraid of when i took mine out. there's probably a specific chip removal tool for this, but i don't have one.

"what's the best way to extract the DOC safely, after you've opened the trap door?:

Slip joint "waterpump" pliers. Grab the DOC at both ends and pull straight out. Just like a chip puller.

I used pliers and the doc popped right out. Worked great. It's pretty hard to pull out without pliers or some other sort of chip puller device.

All DOCs that have been sent to me have been programmed. (lets just say since friday in case there is some in the mail) If you have sent one, and not heard from me or got it back yet please contact me or your local postoffice. Hopefully none have got lost in the mail, I have not heard of any yet...

I just had Bill(hevnsnt), at i-hacked.com reprogram my DOC with windows98. He did a great professional job with a fast turn around time at a reasonable price and kept me informed all along the way. My webplayer which was no longer working since it was not able to access the virgin (or any) browser is now like a semi laptop with all the capabilities that virgin should have put into it in the first place (maybe they would still be alive if they had provided a more useful product). I was worried that I would have trouble taking out or replacing the DOC without damaging it, but it was simple--and I didn't have to take apart the webplayer, only opened the little door on the bottom. My hat goes off to you, Bill, for providing this service for technically challenged people like myself.

Superelena,

How did you remove the DOC once you opened the door?

I removed the DOC thru the little door on the bottom with a thin flat head screwdriver gently getting between it and the socket it goes into. The socket is raised slightly above the circuit board and the DOC lays on top of it, but you can see the separation line on both edges if you look carefully. Go from the outside edge (right edge) inward making sure to raise the back part (or left part) of the DOC at about the same rate as the front part in order not to bend the pins. I taped a note with the the correct direction of the writing on the DOC to the back of the webplayer to remind me of the orientation of the DOC so that I would put it back in correctly.

I think we sent our DOCS in to Bill close to the same time for the same reason-dead webplayers. What are you and every one else doing to turn these things off and on?I am now using a Stanley remote control power switch that I had lying around to do this.I really prefer the power button it came with.Other than that it works great, thanks to Bill.

I turn it on and off by plugging in or unplugging the connector in the power cord. Is there a better way? The power button on the webplayer doesn't work with the windows98 program.
