I've already tried Radio Shack, but wasn't able to find a 5V car adapter. They had 4.5V and 6V adapters, as well as a number of universal ones, but none have 5V as a selection. Anyone know where I can get one in a b/m store, or online?

I have looked for one as well. What you can do is spend about $20.00 for a power inverter that converts 12 DC to 120 volt AC.

I'm searching for the same thing, but I think the problem isn't really the voltage, but the amperage. Those 4.5v adapters you mentioned should work, but I've never seen one above 500ma. I'm no EE, but if it's possible to get a regulated 4.5v 500ma from my car's 13.8 15A cigarette lighter socket, then why is finding a 5v 5A packaged solution so hard? I don't want the footprint or the "waste" of using a power inverter. I shouldn't have to convert my 12vdc to 110vac just to get 5vdc. One of my days of this week will be spent talking to local electronic shops. If I get any usable answers I'll be happy to share.

You would be surprised what to find if you search for instance with "DC/DC 25W" at your favorite websearch engine.

Anyway to name one RSIPower has the SKE25A-05 @ $51,80 or the SD-25A-5 @ $58,00. They both are with 9-18V input and 5V 5A output.
If you're a bit handy you can make one yourself with the MAX787 as main component.
You can get a free sample at Maxim where you can also find the datasheet with a circuit diagram that will work very good for
this application. The other components are quite easy to find. If you don't find them locally you will certainly find it at Farnell

Maybe I wasn't reading that well.
The above solution are not ready-to-go adapters to put in your sigarette lighter socket, but if you're a bit handy these small modules can do the job.

OK- you're probably going to find this hard to believe, but I used to work for Maxim. My wife still works there and I'm friends with several of the engineers. I requested some samples of the MAX787 part and I'm going to build the 5V 5A Step Down Converter. If the finished item works well and I'm satisfied with the design I'd be happy to make several more to sell if there were sufficient interest.

Well lucky you!
I'm positive you'll be satisfied.
If you look at the many websites about building a pc in a car to serve as a mp3-player you'll always notice the MAX787 solution.
If you know a few Maxim engineers you could also ask about a good way to solve the heating problem. I'm sure you need a good heatsink.

Well, I'm a few hours ahead (Europe) so I'll be celebrating the last couple of hours of this century when you read this.

What other solution did you have in mind?
Or you buy a 12V/5V module or you build one of your own with the MAX787.
If you want more info on that issue search on the web for people who have
build their own car-mp2-player. You mostly get the max787 solution.

I don't know if he/she is still around.
If you are looking for confirmation if these adapters work
look on the web for people who build their own car MP3 players.
They mostly use the same solution.
They probably can help you a lot.
