I've already posted this, but I wanted to again, just because I wanted to be sure that I could get a response. I've got this thing apart and in pieces all over my livingroom, and it would be nice to be able to put it back together....

OK, I want to check this before I fry anything important... I ordered a fan from tenmax with t10 tape. It came with a white sticker on the bottom. Underneath this sticker is a silver sticker. I managed to get the heatsink off without much problem. Now, looking at the mobo, there's a little white box drawn, and labeled as sw1. To the left of this (when looking at it so that the writing on the chip is right side up), is a pair of things labeled r97 & r98. I believe I need to remove the one labeled r97, and remove the white sticker from the fan, then attach the fan somehow (how?) to the processor. all done?

>>I believe I need to remove the one labeled r97

Yup, that'll give you 266Mhz. Move the resistor to R98 and you get 233MHz

>>remove the white sticker from the fan,

Yup.

>>then attach the fan somehow (how?)

Once you remove the white thing you'll expose the tape. Clean the CPU really good and stick the heatsinl to it.

>>all done?

Yup.

Another idiot question, can the r97 r98 be removed by hand or does it need to be removed with a soldering iron. I don't have an iron and would have to get a friend to loan me one.

thanks in advance, I just don't want to rip up the traces trying to push it out if it must be soldered out

You could just rip the resistor out with pliers, but it's not the best way to do it.

Wait until you get the soldering iron

hey TheKid,

in your opinion, did overclocking the cpu to 266 help stabilize USB flickiness? I recall that some website indicated most USB devices won't work well with cpus 200mhz or below.

Thanks in advance...

warplink - I only have a Linksys usb adapter. It's work fine at all clock speeds. What type of flakiness are you experiencing?

How did you remove the fan? Was the Geode hot, did you have to cut anything? Does the job require the CB to be removed from the case or is it doable with only the case top off?

Anybody tried the whopping 333MHZ yet ?
It should be possible. dunno if cpu likes it though.

I removed r97..seemed just fine a little heat and i think it actually broke on way out. Booted up 266 but now just keep getting blue screen of death from windows...fatal exception vxd vmm (06) 00001fc4 ... anyone with any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I reinstalled windows and thought that would fix it but no go.

UH-OH might be some kind of CPU voltage problem. Here's a bunch of fatal exception related links that I found on GOOGLE

Still acting up but not as bad, guess I spoke too soon, Will have to play with it and try some different drivers for maybe the video.

No need to recover another resistor.
r97 is a zero value resistor or just a short-circuit.
Solder a small wire in and that will do fine.

I've got a few questions... when I'm about to put my TennMax fan on, what's the best way to clean the gunk off of the processor? Are there any recommended solvents, or things I should avoid using?

My other question involves the power for the fan. I've read a few people are using the unused keyboard inputs for a power supply, and others are taking power directly from the 5V input. I'd like to reserve the keyboard inputs for possible future use. If I use the 5V power input directly will the fan turn off with the unit? Is there a better place to power the fan so it'll only be on when the Webplayer is switched on?

Thanks in advance!

To clean off CPU I just scraped excess with razor blade and then cleaned whith alcohol wipe. Seemed fine.
Fan power is easy. The power switch is wired into a plug straight up from hdd connector. with fan you have green/red wire...green connectes to closest white wire to you in first hole next to purple in second hole..third hole is empty forth hole is another white wire and then red connects to red wire in number five spot.
All I did was pop out the connector and then slip out the two wires and wrap fan wire around metal clip and slip back into connector and then plug in...not a problem at all..

As per my overclocking fun above posts..had to put wp back to 233 and worked fine. had one error and that was it in many hours use.. On second wp set to 266 and it wouldn't even boot up to windows. Even wouldn't go to setup screen...set to 233 and it is fine now also..Thanks to K-Ray for the assist...

My fan has a red and black wire, but I assume everything else is the same, right?

So, wiring the fan in such a way (power switch) will make sure that the fan turns off with the unit? I feel this is somewhat important, as the TennMax fan is fairly expensive (yet worth it from what I've heard, compared to other fans) and I want to make sure I don't wear it out.

I hope Jake from the coop gets the units shipped out this week without any further delays. I can't wait!

ok so black connects to closest white wire to you in first hole and then red connects to red wire in number five spot. Fan will turn on when unit is powered up. I used a video cool fan that fits right on to cpu and blows out side of unit and onto the resister above it that get hot so does a decent job. Was cheaper than one you got, but works ok.
