Ok, going by the assumption (something we all know we shouldn't do) that you've downloaded and installed all the drivers to support the WebPlayer hardware (links to which have been posted elsewhere on this BBS), the one thing you need to be sure of is to open the Volume Control panel and not only verify the speaker and main volume controls are enabled, but that the "Line-in" volume control is disabled, or "Muted" (check mark in the Mute box). That seems to be the most common problem for sound on the WP.

If you've done the above already and still have problems, we need a little more info on configuration settings (in Settings/Control Panel/System/Device Manger, is a problem identified with the Sound Card?,...).

Hope this helps.

I don't want to seem to harsh.

Your question is premature and poorly asked. You should (1) use the search feature to find and read the previous posts where people already asked questions like yours, about sound. If that doesn't give you the info you need, then (2) post your question, but give a little more information. We need more info in order to give you a useful answer. "i believe i have install everything need to work" really gives us nothing to go on. Maybe if you told us what you've installed, we might be able to find what you missed. We are all here to help each other, but don't expect us to care more than you do, about your problems. If you aren't interested in expending any effort, we won't be either.

I don't want to piss you off or chase you away, just you remind you of some basic netiquette.

Brothers, Chiiiillll....
(no my kb ain't dyin';)

Kryptics: Did you get your sound working? If not, what sound driver are you using? Anything else you can tell us would be good.

Don't sweat the small stuff.

Yes, Kryptics, is the WP sound working yet? We've all been new to this at one time. I've been there and asked a few of my own questions. Thanks to all the info that has flowed through this board over the past months, I'm glad I can start jumping in and try to share the knowledge. Let me know if what I threw out earlier helped at all. It's good to hear a follow up story.

I have recently turned my webplayer into a laptop thanks to a lot of great help from this discussion board. I even have the USB ethernet working properly (it is the SMC 2102 USB-Ethernet converter). I have installed the larwe drivers and I have looked thru the threads dealing with sound, but I can not get rid of the "!" on the sound device. I have installed and reinstalled the drivers, downloaded them again in case the ones I had were wrong, but nothing seems to make the device enabled properly. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Hey rr9966 - is your sound working? Do you hear any sound from your speakers or are they dead?
If the answer is NO then try the following:

(This is for Kryptics too)

Click on the little speaker on the lower right in the taskbar. Put a check mark in the MUTE box for LINE-IN volume.
Under OPTIONS --> PROPERTIES you can remove the other choices so that you only see VOLUME CONTROL and LINE-IN.

Worst case is that there is a problem with either the volume knob, the speakers, or the wiring. Have you taken apart your screen? Did you reassemble everyting correctly? Did you pinch, cut or damage any wires or connectors?

The problem is that I have no volume control down there. It is either not seeing the device or something. I am aware of the line in problem, I just can't get it to that point yet. I think I have to get rid of the yellow exclamation point problem before I can get a volume control.

i know you said you installed the drivers from lawre's site, but i suggest removing all the devices and installing them again. make sure you install the driver for the PCI Bridge, that seems to be the one that causes problems with the sound not working. once you get the right PCI Bridge drivers, the "!" by the sound card should be gone as well.

here are a few links that might be of help:

http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=vwgeneral&Post=163&Idle=0&Sort=0&Order=Descend&Page=0&Session=

i had a bunch of problems with my sound too (including not having the volume knob turned up enough =) ) but when i followed all the instructions exactly, everything started working.

let us know if you get it working.

OK I finally got it. The mistake I made was trying to add the sound and pci bridge devices. The two unknown devices are the sound and pci bridge devices. Once I assigned the driver files to those unknown devices, everything worked fine. That is after I muted the unused inputs. Thanks again for everyone's help. This has been a great resource and I am very happy to have a 200MHz laptop with a 10Gb hard drive and USB ethernet!
