Well, I've seen the topic posted here before, but have seen no resolutions yet. Has anyone gotten a DOC image up and running with Linux? I'm interested in getting something basic up and working, but I haven't been able to get Linux to write to the DOC. (Maybe I'm just dumb, maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, I dunno....) All I want is basic network connectivity (I have a Belkin USB adapter (it was free, so I won't complain)), e2fsck w/badblocks (I've got a few concerns about my HD, it's an old one I had laying around and may be dying), a decent console MP3 player, cmatrix, and perhaps a couple of other pretty console screen programs. I don't need X or anything complicated, I'm just going to use this to play some of my MP3 collection. All I have is a 16MB DOC, since my 48MB one died. (BTW, hevnsnt, if ya want to see exactly how dead mine is, and if you can make it work, we could probably work something out. E-mail me carnageAToneDOTnet)

If anyone is up for the task, or has some pointers to pass along so I could complete the task myself, please let me know!

Jailbait linux - http://jailbait.sourceforge.net - is what you want. It's a mini distro designed for the I-Opener, which also has a 16 meg DOC.

The installation instructions should work on your webplayer, though you may have to add some modules to get things like sound working.

I've seen jailbait before, and that's just a little more complicated than I'd prefer. I don't need X or netscape or other convoluted apps, just console & MP3. I'm not going to be doing any web surfing from it or anything, so I'd like to keep it as simple as possible. I'd really have no problem installing it myself, I just can't seem to figure out how to make Linux recognize the stupid DOC. :P

Why don't you start with Jailbait, pull what you don't need and then load in a consoled mp3 player? I'm dl'ing JB now to try to do just that. If I manage to get it working, I'll post a doc image somewhere and let the board know.

Has anyone successfully installed Jailbait Linux? I got an error message (incorrect block size or something similar).

Here's the details on what I see when I try to put the Jailbait Linux image on the DOC:

It complains about an "Illegal DiskOnChip Unit Size". Apparently, the putmimg utility will only load an image to a DOC if the image was created from a DOC of the same size.

Is there any way to artificially increase the size of the image? Or, alternatively, would it be possible to format the DOC as a linux volume, make it bootable, and just copy the files to it from the Jailbait image?

I dl'd Jailbait from sourceforge and I have a 16 meg DOC (this was a developer unit). I used a program named Dolly (use this forum's search [All topics] for it). It did install and I get as far as a kernel panic error about not being able to load the VFS. I have to take a picture of it tomorrow to be able to show you what I mean. I'll repost a link for Dolly when I find one.
